Guild Is
Hostess at
Parish House
Great masses of red hawthorne,
dozens ol baskets of red peonies,
and tall red tapers in sliver holders
made the p-risli house of St. Paul's
church, on Chemelieta street un
usually attractive yesterday when
the Junior Guild was hostess at a
bridge tea.
Nearly thirty tables were In play
during the afternoon and a number
of additional guests came In at the
tea hour.

A delightful musical program was
given by Mrs, Arthur Rahn, who
sang several numbers with Miss
Dorothy Pearcc playing her accom
paniments and by Miss Nancy Thicl
sen who sang two numbers also.
The tea table was specially at
tractive with the big red peonies,
red tapers and silver service.
The first prize of the afternoon
was won by Mrs. Richard Schel and
Mrs. Paul Burris received the second
award.

held by the ladies of the Grand
Army of the Republic and their In
vited guests Thursday, at the home

The afternoon was enlivened by an
unusual fish-pond and auction. Mrs.
Thelma DuBols sang a group of
old-fashioned songs. Memorial Day
and convention plans were discuss
ed and perfected. At the tea hour

The annual spring formal given
by members of the senior ballet
class of Mrs. Ralph White's dancing
academy was a beautiful affair of
Thursday evening in the big ball
room In Derby hall.
Hufie baskets of Scotch broom,
iris, palms and snow balls were in
terspersed with dozens of Japanese
lanterns. The reception room adjoin
in was inviting with big daven
ports and soft lights.

will be opened next Thursday lor
the benefit bridge tea which will be
sponsored by the Woman's Alliance
of the Unitarian church. The affair
is being given particularly at this
time because the gardens are at
the heighth of their beauty.

That will be fine will save us time
making our own selections.
Now as to Shakespeare the deer
poacher, or was it Lord Bacon the
bribe taker, there are some things
in these famous writing that could
be dispensed without serious loss to
the reader, as for Instance "The
Merry Wives of Windsor." Old nasty
Jack Falstaff could be pitchforked
out and nobody wronged. Also
"Venus and Adonis," and "Tarquim
and Lucretia." These and other se
lections might bo omitted In ex
purged editions. Still none of us
need be shocked because we can
pass them by and read the county
commissioners' reports or the doings
of Salem city council. This age is
full of prudes and Miss Nancys, male
and female. They can gag at a
gnat and swallow a blow fly.
These moral meddlers will always
be with us, great is the pity. As to
the Bible, It has its censors and
critics aplenty, all the way from
Wellhausen and further back down
to Dr. Briggs and Harry Emerson
Fosdick. Yet the old book is still
here. Recently there Is a large de
mand for Bibles In war-torn China
and in Mexico. Agencies say they
cannot supply tho demand. This
might appear It Is about as easy to
get rid of the critics as the Bible.
