resentative Fisher reluctantly con
sented to go on condition that
Chairman Staples go with them.
Staples said he would go.

bers poked fun at Its reports, Rep

"I don't think we are acting very
Intelligently," Representative Gor
don saldp "but maybe our action
will bring the matter to the sur
face." Pelrce wanted the committee to
reconsider, but Buchanan urged
that the committee "let It ride a
day or two," and this was dono.
Cut Out Nursing.
The bureau of nursing, which
operates in connection with the
board of health, had asked for
$13,520, and this was nil disallow
ed. Senator Strayer moved that the
same treatment be accorded the
bureau of child hygiene and Sena
tor Bell seconded the motion, but
Pelrce rebuked them, declaring
that he thought "It Is wrong to do
the way we are doing," and got a
reconsideration which resulted In
the appointment of Pelrce, Bro
naugh and Butt to investigate.
With little argument the com
mittee voted to discontinue the ap
propriation for the board of pilot
commissioners, which wanted
$400. A bill will be drawn to make
the board sHf-Hustnlnlng. Thia was
on motion of Gordon, who said the
pilots have a very strong organiza
tion rfind draw big fees for them
selves.
The committee waft dubious about
the state board of vocational edu
cation, and Senator Strayer will
Investigate before this Is consider
ed .
The $8000 asked by the Amcrl
ca nidation commission was cut out
and a bill ordered drafted to repeal
the Americanization net.
The state dairy nnd food com
missioner was given all he asked
for, $38,340.
Cut Out Hunters.
The predatory animal hunter

tion. It requested $45,000 and was
cut to $40,(100 the first night the
committee met. Last night Pelrce
moved that It be disallowed and
Fisher seconded his motion. Sena
tor Mann made a strong defense for
the fund and the motion lo5t. Col
lier then moved that $30,000 be
allowed, he and Buchanan aiding
Mann ln Its defense. But Senator
Strayer, who has been bucking that
Item for several years, made a
speech against It.
"I am surprised," he told the de
fenders, "that you men can be
swept off your feet by the propa
ganda of the man that has the job.
Don't you realize that there la a

Gordon moved that the Item be

St. Paul, Minn., aa well aa one ln
Vancouver, B. C-. have franchises
for distributing the beverage.
It was estimated $8000 would be
needed to carry out an advertising
program, and George F. VIck pre
sented a check of $600 to assist
and said equal amounts would
come from other men unable to at
tend. It Is believed the drink, manu
factured from Oregon prunes, can
reach a national sale equivalent to
that of a number of other promin
ent 6-cent drinks on the market,
and that a big business can be de
veloped for Salem, as well as &
heavy output for Oregon prunes.
