RECORD CROWD
EXPECTED FOR
ANNUAL EVENT
Former Monmouth Couple
Observe Golden Wedding

Dallas, Or., Sept. 21. The four
teenth annual Polk county fair will
open Thursday at Pallas for three
day a. With prune and hop harvest

pected. The fair board has adopted the

lowing free admission to the entiro
fair. Charges are only made for
concessions and amusements with
in the Rrounds,
Special emphasis Is being placed

and girls club work. There will be
keen competition In these classifi
cations and much interest Is being
taken throughout the county In
preparing exhibits to enter.
A free trnnd convert will feature
the evening program each fair
night. Soloists have been secured
to help out . with each program.
There will be no speaking. The
D.illas band Is providing the con
certs, with the fair board and Dal
las merchants financing the pro
grams. The amusement concessions have
been tuken by. the Browning
Amusement company and a dance
will bo conducted on the grounds
by the Hit O' Melody Boys' orches
tra of Dallas.
Advance indications point to
some of the best exhibits . ever
shown In the county, according to
Mrs. Brad en, secretary. This is par
ticularly true In the livestock di
vision where many breeders have
promised to exhibit the stock they
are Resting ready for the state fair.
The fact thot the state fair comes
just one week later is an advantage
In this respect.
Falls City, which Is one of the
community exhibitors, is holding a
community fair this week, under
auspices of the chamber of com
merce, and wilt select nn exhibit for
the county fair.
Granges, farmers unions and
community clubs are sponsoring
exhibits from other communities.
A move is on foot among Dallas
business men to close for Friday
afternoon for the fair.' This has
not becn agreed upon as yet but the
arrangement probably, will be
mode.
Corvallis, Sept. 21 Mr. and Mrs.
J, M. Tod row celebrated their gold
en wedding anniversary last week
with a numbe rof relatives and
friends being entertained with a
dinner party.
During the afternoon from 2:30
o'clock until 6:30 o'clock and from
7:30 until after 10 o'clock Cor vu 111
friends and others from a dltance
called at the Ted row home. Many
beautiful gifts and flowers were
presented the couple.
Mr. and Mrs. Tedrow are native
Oregonlans and both are members
of old pioneer families. Mr. Ted
row was born In Lane county and
spent his eurly boyhood there.
Early In life his family located near
Monmouth, where descend en ts of
both families lived for many years.
Mrs. Tedrow is a daughter of the

Amity, Sept. 21. A special meet

parade In robes and masks took
place. Nearly one hundred mask
ed figures were in tho parade and
marched to the city park where a
program was held, open to the
public.

ideals of the klan.
A large number of people at
tended tho parade and meeting,
tho streets being lined with auto-
ohiles and tho sidewalks filled
with interested pedestrians.
DEER BROUGHT IN
AS SPOILS OF CHASE
Dallas, Or., Sept. 21. A niim
bcr of Dallas deer hunteis have
been coming in over tho week-end
with the spoils of the chase. For
the most part they have been quit-
successful. County Clerk Black
'displayed a 150-pound buck from
the Oakrldge district, Eddie Pres
ton brought In a 200-pound mule
deer from tho Bluo mountains.
Other lucky sportsmen Included
Manley Bevens and party, Fred
Auer, Dr. C. I. Foster and others.
SECOND TRIAL FOR
DRUNKEN DRIVER
Dallas, Or., Sept. 21. Ward Bar
nett of Valsetz will probably be giv
en a second justice court trial on
a charge of driving while Intoxicat
ed. His trial Saturday before Jus
tice of the Peaco Gregory resulted
In a hung jury, 4 to 2 for convic
tion. Barnett was arrested at Val
setz about a week ago. - He Is at
liberty undec bond.
Independence, Sept. 21. E. A,
Dunkel has completed his apart
ment house on the corner of Sec
ond and E streets. Tho building
contains one four-room apartment;
one three-room apartment; four
two-room apartments and seven
single rooms. The apartments are
furnished complete, except for bed
ding and dishes.
Mr. Dunkel asked several of -his
friends for appropriate names and
after repented suggestions named
the house "The Dunkel Apartments."
Four, garages have been built In
connection.
Mrs. G race Su ver, formerly of
Monmouth, has leased the building
from Mr. Dunkel and will have
charge of the managing of the
rooms and apartments.
LIONS EAT NOODLES
AT WEEKLY MEETING
lndcpendpp.ee, Sept. 21. A Chi
yese noodle dinner was served at
the regular weekly meeting of the
Lions club yesterday noon. Each
member present was obliged to
eat his noodles with chop sticks.
Tho charter night banquet to be
held at Tillamook this coming Sat
urday night was discussed and five
members from tho "Independence
club plan to be present.

hostess at a one o'clock luncheon
Saturday, when she entertained a
group of her girl friends, most of
whom are leaving Cor college. The
decorations were of asters In shades
of lavender making a delicate color
scheme. The afternoon was spent
In discussing plans for the school
year to como and recalling Inci
dents of days spent at the Wood
burn high school.

1870, and have always made their
home in the Willamette valley.
They have long been residents of
this city. They have two sons.

HOSKINS GIRL
BECOMES BRIDE
Hoskins, Sept. 21. Miss Louise
Dorothy Jones, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Jones of Hoskins,
was quietly piarrled to Arthur
Patrick McNally In Salem on Sat
urday at 5 p. m. The ceremony
was performed by Rev, Kantner in
tho Methodist parsonage. Mr.
Kantner, an old friend of the fam
ily, was tho first preacher In
Kings Valley 45 years ago.
The bride, who was given away
by her father, wore a handsome
costume of apricot canton crepe.
Her mother wore black georgette.
After the wedding a supper was
served in Snlcm.
Mr. and Mrs. McNally will make
their homo for tho present with
tho bride's parents in Hoskins,
where Mr. McNally is employed
with the V, & S. railroad.
Independence, Or., Sept. 21. The
committee in charge of the annual
Independence corn show has defi
nitely decided to add chickens to
the regular line of displays. Here
tofore the exhibits had consisted
solely of corn and vegetables and
the first display of chickens will,
of course, be fairly modest. The
country tributary to Independence
produces a lot of poultry and eggs,
and It is not at all unlikely that
this feature of the corn show may
wthln a few years become the most
important part.
DIES AS RESULT OF
CRANKING TRACTOR
Dalas. Or.. Sept. 21. A. J. Wil
son, well known resident of Dallas,
died Sunday following an opera
tions. Mr. Wilson became 111 sud
denly, It was thought from the re
sult of Internal Injuries he received
while cranking a tractor at the
Hugh Guttry prune dryer fire near
Sheridan last Thursday.
He was operated on Sunday at
the Dallas hospital.- Mr. Wilson
was born on February 13, 1860.
Funeral services will be held at the
Methodist church Tuesday at 1 P
m.
LEAVES FOR EAST TO
ATTEND CONFERENCE
Unionvale, Or., Sept. 21. Mr.
and Mrs. Lyman Gubcr started last
Saturday across the continent to at'
tend the conference of the United
Hvangelicnl church to be held at
Wllllamsport, Pennsylvania. 'Mr,
Guber was elected the Oregon dele
gate. The conference will not start
until October 6, but the Gubers
started early In order to visit at
Washington, D, C, before that date,
then they plan to visit New York
anl other places of Interest beforo
returning home about the first of
November." Mr.-Guber Is a teacher
in the Dayton high school, but ob
tained a leave of absence and
substitute will do his work until he
returns.

Miss uth Hcffley has been elected
to teach at Scotts Mills for the
coming yenr. Miss Hnffley finished
her normal course last June.
