Old McAllister Flouring
Mill, Pioneer Landmark
At Pratum Burned Monday
The old McAllister flouring ralU
near Pratum, one ol the historic
landmarks of Marlon county, was
detsroyed by fire yesterday after
noon. The buildings burned were,
the mill, a warehouse and a gran-;
ary, which wore partially covered
by Insurance. The financial loss
is placed by about 925,000. It is
believed the fire Btarted from an
overheated bearing.
YV. B. McAllister, pioneer owner
ot the mill, had a narrow escape
with his life in making his escape
from the burning building. When
the fire started he was on tuo
third floor and for some time was
not aware that he mill was on
fire. Ho wont down the 'stairs to
the eccond floor which he found a
mass of flames. With difficulty
he renched the first floor where
he tripped on a board and was
thrown downward into tho base

und Clark high school quintet of
Spokane will clash on the Chema
wa floor this eevning in what 1b
expected to be the hardest fought

Tho Spokane team is coming to
Chemawa with a formidable repu
tation and tho locals aro in hoped
of trimming the Yisiting team.
The Lewis and Clark five played
the Franklin high school of Port
land Inst night, winning from
them by a score ot 27 to 6. The
Indians won over Franklin last
Saturday evening by a Bcore of 32
to 23. This will make the Indians
got In and fight to get a victory,
which they are in hopes ot doing,
making efforts to rival their foot
ball team's record, that ot going
through the season without a de
feat.
Two field baskets and one con
verted foul were all that the
Franklin five could register dur
lug the game while the Lewie and
Clark, aCtor some difficulty in the

Coach Qulnty Hunter had his

Neither man was hurt, although
both cars wero badly damaged..
Slippery pavement was blamed for
the accident.
Mrs. William Smith and her
baby son were riding in a Ford
coupe when it skidded off tho St.
Paul-Newberg highway and turn
ed over into a ditch. The baby was
thrown through the windshield
but escaped with a few minor cuts.
Mrs. Smith was nl.jo unhurt. The

Mr. Carleton submits bis candi
dacy and will make hie campaign
on the ground that he is fitted by
training and experience for the
position. For 13 yoars he was as
sistant superintendent ot public
instruction, end for two years was
field representative of Uho univer
slty of Oregon. Through these
positions he has become familiar
with the school problems ot every
section of the state.
After securing as much educa
tion as was then offered In the
Linn county public schools. Mr,
Carleton attended the Santlam
acadaemy at Lebanon. After grad
uating from there, he attended the
University of Oregon and Pacific
university, from which latter in
stittulon he received his A.B. di
groe. Ho later took post graduate
work at the University of Oregon
