rocks." After Mr. Aldred had op
erated the mill for several years,
It paid It stockholder a 400 per
cent stock dividend from earnings
accumulated and undeclared,
which had bcon used In Increasing
tho capacity f tho mill to 300
looms.
I think our company will be
exceedingly forfunato in securing
the services of so competent a man
Mr. Aldred would not con
sent to come to Salem until he
fir3t Investigated growing condl-
ions in the Willamette Valley, and
tho quality of our fibre. After be
coming satisfied on these matters.
Mr. Aldred emphatically informed
our directors he would not come
we wero to engage in the manu
facture of "bread and butter"
goods, saying there was little pro
fit in it, and ho would not come
unless he could make money fur
ho company. In order to show
faith In our project, Mr. Aldred
greed to give us tho benefit of
his services for one year for a sal
ary sufficient to cover his actual
living expenses, provided we would
give him a percentage of our net
earnings thereafter.
"According to our understanding
1th the Canadlnn people, wo were
to sell them 1,000 shares of the
common stock of our corporation
t par, which would have given
them practicnlly the control of the
company, but as it is, the control
Is in the hands of tho ol listens of
Salem. These 1,000 aharea of ctock
111 bo retained by the company
where It will recelvo no dividends,
thereby increasing tho dividends
and value of the remaining common
stock.
There were no differences be
tween our company nnd tho Do
minions Linens Limited, except' as
to policy. Tho severance of our
relations wero mutually agreeable.
We still have their good will, an Is
shown by a letter I received frcra
Mr. D. N. Sanson dated December
14, 1925, In which he said:
'If at any time any member of
our organization can be of any as
sistance to tho people of Salem
n connection with their linen busi
ness, I shall be glad to hear from
you. Or, If any of tho good friends
met in Salem should be coming
east, I should bo extremely pleas
ed receive a visit from you or
them.'
There has never been a time
when the prospects of our Industry
looked so optimistic. Wo have suf
ficient stock subscribed to erect a
mill In Salem, with 100 looms, and
about 1200 spindles, pay the tariff
and freight thereon. Including the
costs of a site, buildings and inci
dental expenses, leaving a suffic
ient working capital. Tho spindles
will be manufactured in Europe,
:ind tho loom purchased at Lock-
port, New York. This will give us
an up-to-date, well equipped mill
"Tho director fool that by the
hange of policies, we will start
our mill when completed, upon n
sound financial basis.
You should bare In mind, if this
