The title of public opinion litis def
initely turned against prohibition.
In the belief of Nicholas Murray
Uutler, preside nt of Columbia Un
iversity. LmH week's senate debase start
ed by Senator Edge of New Jersey
woe the beginning of what will be
a successful movement to reform
"the present Intolerable situation,"
he thinks.
Voluminous correspondence on
the subject, lie said, In a letter
mitde public last night, showed
that thousa.ndi o men and women
who had been sincere piohlbltlon
itits have changed their views and
are asking leadership in a move
ment to reform the present laws.
Dr. Butler's letter was written
to Mrs. Victor A. Scggernian of
Atlantic Highlands, N. J., and con
tended that "to drive prohibition
out of the country has become
a moral i&tue."
The violation or "fundamental
and righteous laws in the futile
and luw-breaking attempt to en
force a foolish and untruthful law"
he wrote, Is "the most immoral
undertaking on which any govern
ment ever embarked."
"No Immoral and unreasonable
public act can long stand," he ndd
ed. "The same argument was made
for slavery 75 years ago that is
made for prohibition today. 7U
elavery wua driven out of the con
stitution and out of the country,
so prohibition will be, and we
shall develop a plan to abolish the
saloon, to suppress the liquor traf
fic and to reduce drunkenness to a
minimum which will be In accord-
anco both with the traditions of
Christianity and the principles of
the American government."
