locul attorney, who has just re
turned from Newport, The mass
meeting woe staged Monday night,
and attended by practically the en
tiro population of the city. Fol
lowing the meeting several fist
fights were staged In the street
outside the meeting pla-ce, it is
reported.
"Things certainly are boiling
over there," says I'hillips.
The controversy is a culmina
tion of a feud of long standing be
tween two factions of the city, a
principal episode of which was the
arrest a few months ago of Hobort
Davey, editor of the local paper on
a cnargo or criminal libel for re
producing a public document in
his newspaper, the document cost
ing reflection upon city officials,
who retorted by arresting Davey.
Davey a case Is slated to come up
for trial at Toledo on January 4.
At Monday night's mass meet
ing charges were flung that the
Newport city government is
honeycombed with graft. That in
to rent amounting to 30 per cent is
paid on city bonds was one of the
charges made, according to Pbil-llps.
"It seems lo me very signifi
cant," sand Phillips today, "that
the city officers rosented having
any discussion made of their
method of running city affairs."
At the mass meeting the New

it was h?ld in the city hall.

her screen version.
At no time In the screen of Lon
Chaney or Norma Shearer has
either of the two stars been given
such a wonderful screen vehicle.

of her former successes and Chan

from his regular characterizations
with highly gratifying results.

Telegraphic Agency.) Loss of
eoveral hundred French troops In
a battle with Druse tribesmen near
Damascus, Monday, is reported in
advices reaching here.
According to these reports, the
battle was waged all day Monday,
Die Druses surrounding the French
troops, numbering eoveral hundred
and almost the entire French force
was killed.
