meeting of Presbyterians at the
present Presbyterian church last

Officlals of the Salem Naviga
tion company, which operates the
river boat lino between Salem
and Portland, this afternoon de
clared that the $26,000 anproprl
ated by congress for clearing the
channel of the Willamette river
will not be a sufficient amount to
meet navigation needs. The
amount will probably be ample,
it Is said, for dredging, but moro
is necessary to finance the con
struction of wing dams, without
which the dredging will bo only
temporary. Local boatmen declare
that it will bo economy In the end
for the government to build wing
