ford for the state high school
football title If present plans do
not fall, It became known Inst eve
ning after an exchange of tele
grams between the two schools.
Yesterday morning, principal
. J. C. Nelson received a challenge
from the aouthern Oregon school
to play them a gnme. Nelson ans
wered that ho wnB willing to meet
them If the red nnd black team
be assured of $200 over and
above oxponaes. . The game would
be subject to tho sanction of the
Btate high school athletic board,
however, It will Do sanctioned,
It Is thought,. ' :

penses for 20 men nnd $200 for
game at Mcdford December 5, wire

"When we made the proposition
to Medford, we had no Idea they
wculd meet our tormfl," said Mr.
Nelfon, "But wo viH certainly ac
cept. "The Medford authorities
seem to think they will be able to
get a crowd of 5,000 persona for
the game. lis outcome, In my opin
Ion, will not mean the state cham
pionship, for tho Portland school
would not acknowledge the claim.
It will be jut another good game."
The game would go far toward
determining tho state champion
ship, however as the Medford team
has defeated every southern Ore
gon school It met by large scores
and the two schools are in a better
position to defend themselves than
any other team. It is thought. Jef
ferson high, of Portland has topped
the ladder in their league but have
refused to meet - the Salem team
as they seem to be anxious to meet
some other team outside of the
t state.
Medford has one of the best
teams In its history The game nt
Medford is expected to bo the hard
est fought game of. the season for
both teams but tho locals are sure
ly going with the determination
of bringing home the long end
of the score. Coach Huntington
declares, however, that tho team
will be kept In the best of shape
for the game, and all of our efforts
will bo pointed toward bringing
bock a victory. The members of the
team have expressed themselves as
glad of the chance to show the peo
ple of Medford their wares, and
declare that they will keep them
selves in shape for the game. Plans
will be developed for either a car
avan or a special train to carry
Salem rooters to the game. It Is
hoped to jtet a large delegation of
rooters to accompany the team,
For the first time in the history

1,000,000 children attended the
. puhlic schools on the opening day.
