of assault and robbery, being arm
ed with a dangerous weapon.

bery of H. Green berg, a tailor, was
granted a commutation from life
imprisonment to 15 years by Hoy

one of a long list of cases In which
Kitner granted pardons, condition
al pardons and commutations, re
sulting in severe criticism being
leveled at him when these official
actions became known.
Pettis' 16 years minus good time
credit expired in April of this year
. and he was discharged. He waa
originally sentenced to life for a
murder commuted In Wasco coun
ty lu 1916,
Pettis and a companion, accord
ing to the Portland police, enter
ed Greenberg's little clothing store
on First street about 3: SO o'clock
yesterday afternoon and arranged
for the purcliaea of two suits and
an overcoat. While Oreenberg woe
wrapping up the clothes one of the
robbers held him up. Instead ol
complying with the demand to
throw up his hands Grcenberg
shotted for help and was struck on
the head with the butt of a gun by
the robber. The merchant ran to
the door, however, where he Is said
to have grappled with Pettis who
apparently was keeping watch.
' Other citizens got into action and
Pettis was soon overpowered and
held until officers arrived.
