A rosy future for the state of
Oregon was visioned by Marshall
Dana of Portland, introduced as
associate editor of the Oregon
Journal, in a speech before the
Salem Lions club at Its weekly
luncheon here today. His announc
ed subject was "Business Ideal
ism in Oregon." He predicted at
the start of his speech that there
will be a continued upward trend
of conditions as regards farming
and industry in the northwest, nt
least until the year 1930. He ad
mi t ted that after that year he
was not sure what the trend
would be. Making a brief refer
ence to Portland he said, "Any
city that does not serve its hinter
land becomes a mere parasite on
the country surrounding it."

IF YOU WERE A
CITY COUNCILMAN?
( Continuec fiom 1'age ono)
know that we arc alive; we should
appear thriving. There Is a cer
tain attraction about a "croat
white way" which breathes of suc
cess and builds a city; our down
town district, ub well as our resi
dence section, should be belter
lighted.
A well lighted city has fur less
crime and law breaking than one
winch tries to economize in light.
It has been said that good street
lights are worth dozens ot police
men. We have done to put Salem "on
the map." However, our good
council will agree with mo that
Salem is on Iu the day time and
off at night.
from all facts you can draw the
conclusion that tho saving on
atrcet lights is poor economy; it is
a positive hindcrance to a city's
development financially and in
dustrially.
