P.) Hundreds of elk, driven
from the mountains into the ac
cessible canyons and flats in
Bearch of food, are being killed by
hunters in the Lewis and Clark
reserve, where die hunting season
opened last SiuWay.
Three elk were killed from the
door of a cabin on Dig Gorge flat
and all about tha region the ani
mals are reported by hunters to
be as thick as cattle and cosy to
shoot.

Veteran Onerator Dead.

P.) Edward. E. Duffy for nearly

lottery to extricate
France from he.' present financial
difficulties is advocated in a reso
lution adopted Wednesday by the
"republican union," a group of
senators which cm prises former
President Poincaie, former Presi
dent Millerancl, former Premier
Francfos Marsail, Henry Choron,
former minister of agriculture,
and other notable- men.
The senators emphasized the
fact that they favor a lottery thip
one time only and take the stand
that it should not have n perma
nent character allowing the gov
ernment to reeort to such a meas
ure at the end of any year when K
finds itself raced by a deficit.
The "republican union' has 95
members in the senate and wield
an important influence in that
house.

IN SYRIA STILL
London, Nov. 5. (A. P.) The
situation In Syria still Is tense and
apparently fraught with grave pos
sibilities. Reports reaching Lon
don assert that there has been re
newed fighting in the eastern out
skirts of Damascus between the
French and rebels and that the
French are using all efforts to
prevent the entry into tho city of
the tribesmen on the outside.
Barricades, Including wiro en
tanglements, have ben ererted In
thy streets of Damascus by the
French, who are declared to be
short of troops and are enrolling
Kurds and other natives to aid
them.
To the north of Damascus It Is
reported that rebels have concen
trated and from various sections
come advices that tho situation is
growing worse. The entire area
from Dnmascus northward to Al
eppo is declared to be held by Bri
gands and Horns Is said to be scelli
Ing with insurrection.
"Uncontrolled rebellion," says
one correspondent, "seems to be
sweeping tho entire country. T-
French forces cannot possibly cope
with the situation owing to in
adequate numbers. No Improve
ment seems possible until reen force
ments arrive. Even the defenses
of Damascus could not resist a
strong organized attnek."
The French are using both ar
tillery and airplanes against the
tribesmen.

they will meet the Columbia uni
versity eleven. The Indians have
had the benefit of two weeks rest
to get prepared for this game and
thty are hoping to come back with
