THE grand opening of the new Salem Elks temple
tonight from 7 to 11 o'clock will afford an op
portunity for many to enjoy the magnificent building
and its rich and tasteful furnishings.
To those who may not be able to arrange to visit
the new building a few notes of description and of its
conception are given.
About three years ago a building committee was
appointed, who in turn appointed a sub-committee
consisting of Mr. E. W. Hazzard, Mr. Frank Wright
man and Mr. Cuyler Van Patten. This committee visit-
ed many lodge temples of the 1'acilic coast ana some
eastern temples securing much valuable information
and suggestions. The result of their efforts has given
the Salem Elks one of the most homelike, convenient
and comfortable temples in the west. The architectual
design was developed by Mr. Van Patten of Salem and
Knighton & Howell of Portland. The estimated cost
was $175,000. Tho building committee was fortunate
in securing a bid $15,000 less than this, however, and
the major portion was used in enriching the plans. The
complete cost being in the neighborhood of $170,000.
The quarter block upon which the building stands was
purchased for $22,500.
The temple which is a three story concrete building
faces the Salem Civic Center at the Southwest corner
of State and Cottage streets.
Splendid arrangement of color have been secured
In the different rooms which adjoin on the main floor.
Each has nn individuality of treatment yet all har
monize when seen together through the spacious door
ways. As one enters the main hall a grand stairway
faces the door at the top of which is seen n largo stain
ed glass window the form of which emphasizes the gen
eral Italian architectual scheme of the building.
At either side of the stairway on tho main floor
stand two decorative figures in Italian marble, repre
senting dawn and evening. Their size and color are a
fortunate addition to the decorations and the color
schemes of the entire building seem to bo taken
from the delicate tints of these statues and their tinted
marble bases.
To the right as one enters the main doorway on
State street is a large checking room, ample to ac
commodate the hats and coats of the entire member
ship. Opening off to the right, at the West end of the
building, is the buffet with the card room to the right,
on the North side, in the front of the building, facing
State street. To the left in the back is the billiard and
pool room. On the left as you enter is the writing
room with the lounging room occupying the front cor
ner facing State and Cottage streets. On the opposite
side of tho hnll from the writing room is tho ladies
room. Opposite the checking room is tho Secretaries'
office. The dining room, which will be open tonight
until 11 o'clock, is just back of the ladies' room. On
the top floor, at the west side, is the lodge room while
the east side is mainly taken up with the spacious
auditorium.
An outstanding note which impresses one is a fine
example of old English woven tapestry depicting a
hunting scene. It is 6 by 9 feet and is properly hung,
as tapestry, not framed.

The contractors who erected the building were
Messrs Parker and Banfield of Portland. The reputa
tion and character of this well known firm removed
all doubt and insured to those so vitally interested the
highest grade of construction, which is now an ac
complished fact.
The rubber tile flooring which is an outstanding
feature of the new building was furnished and laid by
the U. S. Rubber Co., of Portland. The main hall is
laid with 12 inch squares in black and gray except in
the writing room where a shade of red has been added
to the tile to lend warmth. In some of the design in
laying is varied to a diagonal pattern to secure line
relief.
The plaster and relief work was done by Mr.
David L. Hoggan of Portland- Mr. Hoggan has to his
credit some of the finest work on the Pacific coast,
in such buildings as the U. S. Bank of Portland, the
Washington building in Tacoma, the Educational
hall of the University of Washington, the Elks Temple
of Portland and many others.
The architects In their quost for qualify decided on polish
ed plate, 1). S. A. A., tho highest quality sheet glass and Opal
escent plaiss to harmonizo with tho particular architecture of
tho bulhlin?. This was supplied by W. P. Fuller & Co. of Port
land. Tho tllo roofing was laid by Theo. M. Barr of Salom who
also Installed tho Thompson sprinkling Gystcm, thus Insuring
quality and dependable workmanship,
Tho C. S. Hamilton Furniture Co., of Salem have Justifiable
prldo in tho part they took In furnishing the Imperial Bundahr
Wilton carpet In the lounging room and tho ladies room.
All tho lumber and wood work was furnished by the Chas.
IC. Spauldlng Company of Salem. Their reputation for de
pendable mnterluls of high grade and prompt and accommo
dating scrvlco were a valuablo asset to the builders.
Tho ventilating system which Is one of the most adequate
In the Northwest was Installed by Carll Armprlest of Salem
who has Just closed tho contract for the sheet metal roofing
of the elaborate new Elslnore Theater In Salem, Mr. Armprlest
also Installed tho ventilating system In tho Elks temple In Cor
vaills. The roofing and sheet motnl work of tho Silverton
Armory and of tho new Salem paper box factory are a credit
to bis craftsmanship In this most essential line.
All tho draperies ore from the II. Tj. Stiff Furniture Co.,
who also lnld the imported English linoleum In tho auditorium,
this with a novel three border design. Tho fine Spanish leath
er, overstuffed furniture In tho lounging room: tho genuino
mahogany card tables in tho card room and all tho lamps, sil
verware and kitchen furnishings Including tho rango are from
this firm, who have lived up to their splendid reputation In
supplying the best.
Tho elevator, which Is In keeping with tho rest of the
building and Its furnishings for design and service, was Install,
ed by the Portland Elevator Co., of Portland, who have a long
list of grateful customers In the West. Among the passenger
levators In Salem which they have Installed and which are
giving sntlsfacUon plus are those at the Capitol building. Ma
sonic Temple, Supremo Court and Library building and the
Deaconets hospital; of the freight type are those at the Wltten-burg-KIng
plant, Vlek Bros, sales building and garage and
the four at the Oregon Pulp and Paper mill.
The decorating which Is so well handled ajld obtains such
pleasing effects and all the painting and wood finishing was
done by tho W. P. Pleasing Co., of Portland. This firm has a
complote organization of artists and highly skilled workmen
avalloble for all classes of decoraUve work.
Tho sheet metal work was done by the reputable firm of
Nelson Bros., who enjoy a wide range of patronage.
The excavating and lawn grading was done by James A.
Kapphahn who specializes In this class of work. An under
standing of the requirements and an appreciation of time,
which are ever to be reckoned with In building, are always up
permost In air. Kappahahn's mind.
The C. P. Tttshop Co., of Salem, furnished the 400 uniforms
worn by the Elki at the national convention at Portland this
year.
The Tile Roofing and the Sprinkling System of the
New Elks Temple were furnished by
