KILLED BV AUTO
La Grande, Oct, 21 James Ho
mlg, 27, of Baker, was instantly
killed at 11:30 o'clock Monday
night when struck by an automo
bile driven by C. H. Getchcll on the
Old Oregon Trail near Hot Lake,
Oregon.
According to officers who In
vestigated the -accident, Romig had
taken a friend to Hot Lake after
an evening spent In La Grande. He
was returning to La Grande when
he stopped the machine. Presum
ably he was putting water In the
rauiator wnon u etc hen a car
struck htm.
Coroner Ralston said an Inquest
would be held late today. Romig,
who was a surveyor for the Cen
tral Railroad of Oregon, with head
quarters at Union, Ore., was the
son of Mr. ana Mrs. James Romig
of Baker.

Damascus, Syria, Oct. 21. (A.
P.) An Insurrection which broke
out here last night, with Infiltrat
ing groups ot Druze tribesmen
assisted by local elements, has
been put down by the French
forces.
Bands of tribesmen filtered into
the southern section of the city,
were joined by local Inhabitants
and at 9 o'clock last night sud
denly attacked the French occu
pants. The troops managed to remain
in possession of the public utilities
and buildings and the military
establishments, against which the
Insurgents directed a continuous
rifle fire.
The French artillery replied by
bombarding the insurgent quar
ters throughout the night and
continued today. Armored cars
and tanks were called Into action.
The Moslem section of the city
suffered heavy damage both from
rebel Incendiaries and the French
bombardment.
The French say their own losses
were slight.
Late this afternoon Moslem in
surgent leaders accepted the terms
of surrender offered by General
Sarrail, the Freuch high commis
sioner In Syria, which called for
the payment of a heavy fine and
