ASSAULT CASE
New York, Sept. 19. (A. P.)
Arraigned before Magistrate Jean
Norris, the only woman police,
court Judge in the city, Alberto
iiaccollnl, artistic director and
conductor of the Boston civic
opera company, today was held in
$1,000 ball for further hearing
October2 on a charge of felonious
assault which resulted from a
backstage fight last night in the
.Manhattan op em bouse. The
trouble followed a quarrel over
payment of the chorus appearing
in Bellini's "Norma."
Frank Schurman, walking dele
gate of the grand opera choral
alliance, and complainant against
Baccollni, did not appear In
court. Magistrate Norris was told
that one of Schurman's ears was
nearly severed when he was
knocked Into an ash can by
Baccollni,
Baccolini's lawyer explained
that when Schurman asked Bac
collni about payments for the
chorus he was referred to a repre
sentative of the opera company.
Thereupon, Schurman called him
Mar and struck him. Ilancnlini
struck back. The entire company,
stage hands and orchestra were
soon Involved In the fracas.
The opera performance was de
layed an hour and Mile. Clara
Jaconbo, president of the com
pany and principal last night,
became hysterical at the end of
the first act and was replaced by
another .singer.
