day noon la attracting consider
able attention both locally and
from neighboring communities.
The floral display in the halls and
on the stage of the Eugene Field
auditorium is especially attracting
attention. The reck garden olnd
city pond are surrounded by a
group of admirers at all times. The
commercial booths which occupy
the greater amount of the audi
torium are also attracting much
favorable comment.
The woman's society shop enter

will hold another show Saturday

death of Frank H. McCormick oc
curred in l'ortland, September 7,
at tho home of his son, Hurry Mc
cormick. Mr. McCormlck was an
old resident ot Sidney, having
lived hero ovor twenty yeuru. Two
years ago ho sold his farm aud re
moved to lluona Vista, where he
lived until his final Illness. Ho
is ourWed by two sons and two
daughters and several grandchil
dren. Mrs. Iticuormlck died at the
homo horo about seven years ago.

special deputy game wardens and
will make enforcement ofneers en.

years, Aver ill said, and between

been made by them and, AveriH
believes that practically the only

number of communities compet
ing in the history of Polk county
fairs, according to Winnie Braden,
secretary. Six communities arc
represented. There Is a very go?d

principally to Jerseys, but the
poultry, bogs and sheep are lighter
than expected.
The judging is baing handled
by four representatives of the Ore
gon Agricutlural college. Tboy
are: N. C. Jcmisou, dairy cattle;
L. J. Allen, livestock; H. Hurtmau,
horticulture, and Esther B. Cooley,
home economics.
Saturday will probably bo the
banner -day in attendance as t
will mark the announcement of
exhibit winners. The program for
Saturday night is an excellent one.
It will be featured largely by musi
cal selections with artists from In
dependence, Monmouth, Brush
College and Dallas appearing. The
DalUis band will give a concert at

FALL ON DANCE FLOOR
CAUSES DEATH OF CHILD

Barkmeyer, the 7-year-old daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Barkmeyer,
died Tuesday morning at a Salem
hospital from blood poisoning.
The child had been ill little more
than a week when death occurred.
Ou Sunday, August 30, Mr, and
Mrs. Barkmeyer and children were
attending the Knights of Colum
bus picnic in tho Masonic grove,
the little girl v.ao playing with
some other children ou the dance
floor of the pavilion when sho
clipped and Injured her leg. At
first the Injuiy did not appear to
bo serious but after several days
the pain became so severe that the
child was taken to Salem for treat
ment at one of the hospitals. It
was then decided that an opera
tion would be necessary. The
operation was performed but fail
ed to relievo the condition nnd re-!
bulted in her death. Louise is sur
vived by her father and mother i
uid a month-old baby brother.

cancelled vouchers that had been
cashed during August at the Dal
las City bank. The check In ques
tion had been drawn July 3, 1917,
and was marked paid on August 5.

about slaying.
Less than two weeks ago na
