To the Editor: The courage that
defends a seemingly Innocent man's
life, la not blah. I am defending
Eleworth Kelly, because I know
of no actual crime, that he has
committed. If ho really did kill
Guard Holman, I have nothing to
say, as far as I know It has not
been proven that he actually did,
unless It la proven, not circumstan
tially, but positively (an excited
Indictment doesn't really make It
true). If the state hangs him for
something ho did not actually do,
then it is the state, that actually
becomes a murderer, not only of
Kelly, but through Us Inefficiency
of its noble employee Mr. Holman.
I have been told that tho state did
murder one man innocently an Af
rlcan nobleman of nature. Kelly's
only crime was to try to release
persons from some county Jail.
(Ho did not keep within the law)
In trying to escape from the pen
he risked his own life from, tho
guns of the guards, who knows
that he Intended to kill or that he
did kill. Of this he may be as In
nocent as you or I. I don't blame
him for trying to escape, I blame
those who left It possible. Oregon's
honest majority, defeated capital
punishment. The June election
swung In when few people go to
vote kept within the law, a law
that was not justice to the state's
full vote. 'Twns thus, the blood
thirsty won. If Kelly didn't actual
ly kill, and Governor Pierce Is
afraid to interfere, let him write a
pardon, and then send for me. I
will present it to Kelly. I ask for
his freedom.
