DENOUNCEDARROW
AT BRYAN MEET
Dayton, Tenn., Aug. 13 (AP)
Organization of the William J.
Bryan memorial assoclailou hero
last night was marked by denun
ciation of Clarenco JDarrow by A.
T. Stewart, prosecuting nttovnoy
in the Scopes evolution trial, and
a denial by Judge John T. ltaul-
ston, who presided at the hearing,
of charges by Mr. Darrow that the
judge had used the trial to fuuher
his political hit ores Is.
The association, formed for the
purpose of erecting a fundamental
ist school here in memory of Mr.
Uryan, set as a goal the raising of
one and a half million dollars for
buildings and five millions (or the
endowment of the proposed Insti
tution. Mr, Darrow who served as a de
fense attorney in the John T.
Scopes trial, was nenounced by Mr.
Stewart as "the greatest menace
present day civilization has to deal
with."
'I do not believe there would be
a serious clash between religion
nnd science," tho attorney said, "If
it were not for the Godless Darrow
:vnd his Ilk spreading their propa
ganda nnd trying to destroy faith
In tho bible. His doctrine Is a
curse. Unless tho people of this
land suppress him, more evil wit!
bo done."
Judge Raulston declared that
Mr. Darrow's statement that he
had used his fundamentalist be
liefs to further his political In
terests was "without justification."
"If I seek reelection," ho said,
"It will be wholly on my record
as judge and I don't believe Mr.
Darrow's sarcasm can prejudice the
minds of the people against me.
"Mr. Darrow now refers to me
as being ignorant and Intimates
that I am unworthy of the otuce
which I now hold. I prefer that
the latter question be referred to
the people in my district ratnci
than to him."
