taken into consideration that
Calgary Lass Is under 14.2 hands,
tho jump is considered nothing
short of miraculous.
Twenty-two yenrs of age and
still able to top tho timbers at 6

be surprising if one or more new
early season records were run uu
during the horse show at the stale
fair.
Fine Horses Comine
In addition to having their
string of unbeaten Jumpers, Welsh
brothers also boast of having the
finest family of riders on the con
tinent. Heading the stable is
Louis Welsh, agcu 15 years, who
has ridden their horse, Uarra
Ladd, holders of tho Pacific coaat
high jump record ot 7 feet 4
Inches, to a hundred victories
from coast to coast. Next is Josic
Welsh, aged 17, who rides a team
of Kotnau jumping horses over a
five-fot fence, standing on their
backs. Alfie Welsh, aged 11 years,
has piloted Mademoiselle, the
famous 21-year-old jumping mare
over a five foot nine jump, and
tho youngest rider of this group,
Lawrence Welsh, is hailed
throughout the Pacific coast as
the "boy wonder." Lawrence
Welsh is but 8 years old. but haft
the saat of a veteran rider. His
handling of Calgary Lass, world'3
champion pony high jumper with
a mark of 6 feet 2 inches, Is said
to be nothing short of miraculous.

Barra Ladd Comine
The appearance of Uarra Ladd
at the state fair will be of more
than ordinary interest because of
tho fact that arrangements have
been completed with the officials
of the Royal Fair at Westminster,
B. C, for the calgary horse to
have a go at the world's high
Jumping record of 8 feet 13-16 of
an inch, at present held by Great
Heart, owned by the Pea bod ys of
Chicago. Barra Ladd, with Louis

In any hors? show In Canada or
the United tSates and his owners
are confident that e will estab

tho most consistent jumper that
has ever appeared In a show ring,

BESTS HELEN WILLS
Seabright, N. J., Aug. 1. Miss
Helen Wills of Berkeley, Cul., na
tional women's tennis champion
was defeated today in straight
sets, by Miss Elizabeth Ryan, of
England nnd California, in -the
final women's single matches of
the Seabright Invitation tourna
ment. The scores were 6-3, 6-3
It was the first defeat Miss
Wills has sustained on the Ameri
can courts since 1923, when she
first won the national title from
Mrs. Mallory, and established Miss
Uyan as a formidable contender
for the championship to be played
at Forest vlills in a few weeks.
Miss Ryan's decisive margin of
victory came as a complete and
stunning surprise to the specta
tors who established Miss Wills as
a strong favorite to win.
The court, drenched anil soggy
after an all-day and night rain,
made the footing precarious, but
this condition seemed to bother
Miss Wills more than It did Mia
Ryan, who discarded her shoes
and played In aer stocking feet
after the first game ot me open

The softness of the tuft permit
ted little bound to the- ball and
seemed to aid the sharply angled
shots and well placed drives of
Mies Ryan, whose court general
ship was superior throughout to
that of the American champion

In Folsom prison, Bill Austin, 65

he was unable to cope. Today he
is on his way back to Foieom to

Austin was convicted a quarter

last May as a vagrant but escaped,
being returned to prison as a pa

"Life outside was too hard and
I got blue and discouraged," he ex
