Withdrawn yesterday on the eve
of the date set for argument on the
government's motion to dlm!a
tho suit, attorneys for Loren H.
Wlttner, the government clerk,
who filed it announced that In tak
ing this action, they planned to
file another suit designed to sur
Tlve objections raised against the
complaint aa first drawn. Among
other objections raised, the gov
ernment, In its motion to dismiss,
lted precedents which It held de
nied Wittner's right as a tax-payer
to suit to prevent payment of sal
aries to school officials here res
ponsible for certain biological teach
ngs in the echools. The complaint
held such Instruction to be in vio
lation of a provision of the District
of Columbia appropriation bill
against teaching disrespect for the
Holy Bible.
To strengthen his case Wlttner
announced he would not only file
his next suit as a taxpayer in the
District of Columbia Instead of a
federal court but also wouJd seek
to have a local taxpayer, with chil
dren attending public schools here

ner is being assisted by the Rev.
H. M. Lawson, pastor of the Mary
land Avenue Baptist church.
CENTENNIAL
Vancouver, Wash., July 31
(fipeclnl) Vancouver Is making
preparations for tho reception of
thousands of visitors during the
week beginning August 17 when
the oldest clly in tho state of
Washington will open tho celebru
tlon of its Centennial. It was In
1825 that Dr. John McLaughlin
came to this place and, ns chief
factor of tho Hudson Bay company,
established the trading post hero
which he called IVort Vancouver
and from which ho ruled the Ore
gon empire from California on the
outh to tho North I'olo and from
tho Pacific ocean to the Kocky
t mountain.
Under special act of congress
the minting of half dollar pieces
commemorating tho Vancouver
centennial is now under way and
on August 8 the first consignment
la to be shipped from the Ban
Francisco mint. These coins have
a profile of Dr. John McLaughlin
on one side and of old Fort Van
couver on the other side and they
are unique Jn that unlike all oth
er coin Issues since the Columbian
exposition at Chicago they bear the
name of tho town at which the
celebration Is held thereon. The
directors of the centennial have
orderod but a limited minting of
this coin, and already have thous
ands of orders for these at one dol
lar each. The celebration, under
written by local capital is hoping
to meet a large part of Its expenses
through the sale of these coins.
The celebration will consist of an
industrial and automobile exposi
tion, a large outdoor aim use m en t
park, a pageant with 310 persons
and chorus of 150 each night for
the week beginning August 17, and-j
a wonderful historical exhibit
which has been prepared under the
auspices of Glenn M. Ranck of this
city, with the co-operation of the
Oregon Historical Society and the
Washington Historical Society.
Opening exet-clscs, see for August
17, will attract notable persons
from the two states and a big re
ception for that date has been plan
ned. The governors of Washing
ton and Oregon and the congres
sional delegations from the two
states, with mayors of many of
the cities, have been Invited to
participate In these exercises.

Portland, Or., July 31. The Al
bina marine Iron works, part of
the Corufcot shipyard of war
time, was destroyed by fire early
today. The damage was estimated
at $100,000, only a small part of
which was covered by insurance.
William Corn foot, head of tho
Albin marine iron works, was un
able to eay this morning whether
the plant would be rebuilt.
The flamee leaped the street at
one time and attacked the ware
house of the Northwest Sales com
pony, but firemen prevented seri
ous loss to that structure. The
cause of the fire had not been
learned this morning.
The fire was discovered In the
southeast corner of the huge
building occupied by the iron
work and had gained great head
way when 'iremen arrived. The
fire was specLucular, the flamefi
lighting the sky over the whole
city.
