tions have been issued by the min
istry of finance to German cus
tomj officers in frontier towns to
facilitate tourist and other inter
national travel as much as possi
ble. Not enly is there abandoned
the practice which obtained dur
ing the first years after the war,
by which every traveler must leave
the railway coach with his bag
gage at thi frontier and submit to
a careful inspection of his belong
ings, but tho officers have been
tol l merely to requlro the occa
sional opening of a trunk by way
of making a test.
KIEL CANAL TRAFFIC GROWS

through the Kiel canal last year
hnd more than tripled since the
close of the World war and the to
tal tonnage surpassed that of
1913. In the latter year C3.3S2
vessels with a total tonnage of
10,349.;29, passed through the
canal. The number of vessels In
1918 was 15.r2y aggregating
4,720,000 tons. Last year's traffic
showed 42.373 vessels with a to

It has just been learned that
Colonel E. Hofer, publisher, edi
tor, author, lecturer and travel-;!'
of Salem, was knocked unconscious
for nearly a quarter of an hour
last week when the big sedan in
which he was riding was hit by a"
Ford on C'JUift st-iieet. Colonel
Hofer, who was riding on the rear
seat, looking at his mail, was
thrown to the side of the car, hid
head and shoulder striking the car.
To wearing a stiff straw hat tie
colonel attributes his escape from
possibly fatal injuries. As ft Jp,
it is feared that he may also have
sustained some internal injur.
However. he has been able to leave

Finley in his charges against the
threo ousted officials were Game
Commissioners J. W. Muloney of
Pendleton and M. H. Bauer of Cor
vallls. These three demanded that
press representatives be excluded
from the session, but the others
would not agree to this and the
newspapermen remained. Dr. Ches
ter Moore, president of the Oregon
Sportsmen's association, demanded
an absolutely open hearing.
Moore clashed In a sensational
way with Finley, Mnloney and
Bauer and Informed them that
their action would haunt them for
the rest of their lives.
Charges Fly Fast
He accused Finley of trying to
wreck the game department which
he termed "the greatest asset of
the state." He further accused Fin
ley of doing the dirty work that
Price refused to do In framlng-up
the ouster of Burghduff. On the
other hand Finley accused Burgh
duff and Rycknian of conducting
a private fish hatchery and failing
as state officers to obtain reports
from their own enterprise. Jones
was accused ot spending money
for taking a film that was more
for commercial than sport purposes
Burghduff replied by declaring
that Governor Pierce's special In
vestigators had opened outlet gates
at the Burghduff-Rychman hatch
ery to make it apear that the
hatchery was releasing fish that it
had no legal right to hold. Jones
declared that Finley, as former
state biologist, had not left the de
partment a single film that was of
any use.
Jones assailed Judge Maloney
relative to an arrest of Jones and
Maloney's son on the Umatilla
reservation for possession of liquor,
Jones declaring that he had been
made a pawn In the case. Maloney
branded as lies newspaper stories
of his participation In a confer
ence with George L. Cleaver to
frame Burghduff on a liquor
charge.

averred that no man in the state
game department should bo inter
ested in private hatcheries, and
Dr Moore countered by suggesting
that all state departments from
the governor down be Investigated
as to their connection with private
business. Burghduff said that
while he wa.i under investigation
with respect to his hatchery, some
one, representatives of the govern-'

screens and allowed about 20,000
small salmon and trout to escape.

motion was seconded by Bauer.
