AT IDAHO MEET
Julian Burroughs, resident of
Salem, graduato of Salem high
school and student of Oregon Agri
cultural college, has returned to
this city from Lewlston, Idaho,
having won for himself the north
west championship in fancy div
ing. The Pacific Northwest asso
ciation meeting was held at Lewia
ton on July 2, 3, and 5. Nearly
100 contestants from every part
of the northwest were present at
the meet, H irroughB will enter
the United States national meet
to be held In Scuttle July 29 io
August 1. He represents Mult
nomah Amateur Athletic club of
Portland. At O. a, C. he has won
his letter for three years and rep
resented hiB school on trips o
various parts of the country. -
Previous to going to Lewlston,
Burroughs went with the Muituu-
rouh team, consisting of two men
and five women, to a meet staei
at Vancouver, 11. u. The second
man on the team was Orvllle
Petorsou of Spokane. The worn
in were all Portland residents.
At Vancouver, Burroughs wou
lecond place in the fancy diving
the first night and first place on
the second and third nights. Dales
were June 27, 29 and 30. All
dives were taken from a board
fixed three meters, or nearly 0
feet, above the surface of the
water. The fancy diving cventii
Included the 214 summersault,
flying fronts and other features.
The contest was staged according
to Canadian rules which dlffar
chiefly from those of the United
Estates in designating the dives Ly
different names tnnn those famil
iar to American divers. Tho wom
en representing Multnomah club
won everything In the speed anu
distunes swimming. Burroughs
did not enter the swimming fen
tests.
The meet at Vancouver was
Staged as part or the opening of
a new 300,000 swimming luint
built there. The roof and sides '.f
tbe building which encloses the
tank are made of glass, making
the structure resemble a huge hot
house. Moro than 100 swimmers
and divers from all parts of the
west were prosent at the grand
opening. Cups were awarded but
no titles wero at stake. The
Multnomah delegation left Van
couver on July 1, Dominion day.
At Lewlston tae competition
was keener than at Vancouver,

to 110 and 12 every day. The
diving events, which he won over
all contestants, wers taken from
a 10-foot board.
The five women swlromors from
Portland were not taken to Lewis
ton.
The national meet to be held at
Seattle, beginning July 29, will
mark the fiiBt time a meet of its
kind has been staged In the north
west. Burroughs will be pitted
against Pete Jardine of Miami
Florida, and probably Al White,
Stanford diver and recent mem
ber of the Olympic club of Han
Francisco. White won everything
in tbe way of fancy diving at the
Olympic games in 1924, Jardine
taking second. At the tryouts for
the Olympic team Burroughs was
matched, almg with numerous
other American divers, against
both Jardine and White. Bu
roughs took fourth place 'n the
tryouta.
Other internationally known
contestants at tbe meet in Seattle
will be Johnny Weismuller of the
Illinois Athletic club, the fastest
iiwlmmer in tho world, and Arman
Borg of Sweden world's champion
distance swimmer.
The meet will bo held on the
University of Washington cauinw,

Burroughs has been entered for
the plnin high diving as well as
tho low boards fancy diving. The
low boards diving will be from
4-foot and 10-foot boards. The
high dlvin? hard will be elevated
30 feet fram the surface of the
water.
