name for himself as an athlete nnd
orator. In a field meet staged
against Willamette university at
Salem he took five firsts, two sec
onda and one third prize. In 1903
he won tho slate oratorical con
test.
His broiher, Paul Poling, grad
uated from Willamette university
last month, having mado his let
ter In baseball, made the basket
ball squad, and been elected presi
dent of his class.
At present "Dan" Poling Is mirv
ister of Marble Collegiate church
in New York city, the oldest Pro
testant church In North America
from the standpoint of continuous

year 1G23. Among its members
have been Peter Stuyveant, famous
Dutch figure in the city's earliest
days, and Theodore Roosevelt,

for the construction of a new wing
for the eastern Oregon hospital

The meeting of the board of con

other. Tho governor Insisted that
contracts should be awarded con
cerns tiiat operate under tho stato
workmen's compensation oct, while
Kay and Kozer insisted that the
law does not require this. Kay ac
cused the governor ot doing more
than anyone else to kill tho com
pensation commission for the rea
son that he successfully opposed
tho legislature's plan to appropriate
money for the commission for the
present biennium.

49 YEARS OEM
Rebecca Jano Raker, resldont of
Salem sinco 187G, died at her home
at 990 Oak street Monday night,
Siio nad been very frail for a num
ber of years, but her last illness
lasted for only a few days. She
was born in Petersburg, Illinois, In
1810 nnd grew to womanhood
there. She was married to John
Crafn Baker In 1806. They mov
ed to Kansas for a few years be
tore coming on to Salem.
ne is survived by two great
grand children, 6 grand children
and two daughters. Her husband
died 20 yenrs ago, and her sons
Frod C. nnd Frank M. died within
recent years.
Mrs. Baker was one of the oldest
residents living In Salem. The body
Is to lie In stato at Webb's funeral
parlors between the hours of 9 a.
m. and 5 p. m. Wednesday. Fun
oral services will be held at the
Portland Crematorium Thursday at
11 a. m.

As an emergency mensuro caus
ed by tho establishing of a swim
ming resort on lat street, an or-
dinanco was put through throe
readings nnd passed prohibiting
the parking of automobiles on
bridges and Instructing the city
street commissioner to place signs
to thnt effect on all bridges in the
city, including tho east end of the
Marion-Polk county bridge.
An ordinance was passed estab
lishlng a grade at Myrtle avonuo
from Highland to Fairgrounds
road.

ances providing for increase in the
ilaries of tho chief of police and
fire chief, ordinances were Intro
duced to assess tho cost of improv
