Elizabeth M. Harris, last ot the
children ot Central Morton M. Mc
Cavver, plonker legislator of the
old Oregon territory and ot Cali
fornia, died here yesterday at the
age of 72 years. Her father for
many years commanded an im
portant place in the pioneer life
of Oregon, Washington and Cali
fornia nnd v'is recorded as one of
the originator. ot the territorial
law of Oregon, the first legielation
of the kind in the United States.
Ho came to Oregon in 1843 with
the l.arty led by Peter H. Burnett,
first governor of Oregon. He was
commissary general of Oregon
territory during the Indian -wart;
of 1855 and 1 S5C.

and girl scouts of Mill City held
open house in their new cabine
Monday evening, having as their
special guests the Masonic and
Odd Fellow lodges and the lire
department, thru whose efforts
mainly the building of the cabins
was made possible. A large num
ber of the above mentioned, their
wives and friends visited the cab
ins during the evening, which
have been fitted up very nicely
including new rustic furniture
and fireplaces. The girl scouts

when crossing was struck by an

The right rear fender of the car
struck her, throwing her to the

POURING CONCRETE FOR
ALBANY BRIDGE PIERS
Albany, June 18 The pouring
of approximately 35,000 cubic yards
of cement In the coffor dama pre
pared to build the five piers In
the river channel ot the state high
way bridge crossing the Willam
ette river here will be completed
within the next few days, report
Superintendent Wheatou.
Owing to some bad luck on build
ing- pier number three, the work
haa been detained a few days. Tho
work of the fourth pier In placing
the cement Is now on with the fifth
the last of the number, to be built
witliin the next few days.
The piers on an average require
approximately 700 cubic yards of
cement. The piers extend about 11
feet below the bottom of the river
which on an average is 25 feet
deep.
The laying of the steel will be
gin in about two weeks. This work
will not be detained on account of
the piers not being seasoned, a
but little of the weight Is placed
on them In the preliminary work,
it is reported. The builders antici
pate no further delay on account
of weather conditions or materials.
