CITY PAVER IDLE
AS TIME SPEEDS

The machine is supposed to have
paving capacity of something
like 1200 square yards, a block or
thereabouts, every day. But during I
the entire first half of June, be
cause of rain and fog, the mach
ine hasn't turned a wheel.
Explanation la made that the pav
r Itself Is all right. It would work
right along If sand and gravel
coul dbe gotten to It. But If the
dirt surface of an unpuved street
Is a little wet ti e heavy motor
trucks of the sand and gravel com
pany with which the city has con
tracted for material are unable to
reach the paving machine. Under
the old system of paving streets,
used u pto this year, the method
was for the trucks to haul the ma
terial to the street and atrew It
along the edges of the street when
ven convenient. It might be sev
eral days before the paving actual
. ly Is started. . But under the new
system It Is necessary for the ;
trucks, each hauling three cubic I
yards, to drive to the paver and
dump the sand an dgravel direct
ly Into the machine as It operates.
And If the trucks can't net to the
paver, the paver can't operate.
Discussion of the paver came up
at the city council meeting last
night i connection with a bid on
a street grader and skimmer that
the city may purchase. Concern
ing the paver, now idle. Alderman
Rosebraugh expressed the opinion
tha twlth the coming of good
weather It would soon catch up
with Its work.
The council rejected the bid of
16700 for the grader, but eovoral
other bids on gasoline machines
are still under consideration.

An ordinance was Introduced
and passed at the city council
meeting last night to curb the Bale
of firecrackers end other fire
works by Salem dealers as a pre
caution against fire.
The ordinance provide that the
dealer must obtain a permit for
sale from the mayor, and provision
will be made under the ordinance
posslblo for the sales to be allow
ed a day , or two in advance of the
fourth of. July. The ordinance
was Introduced for the reason that
dealers already are selling fire
crackers and beys firing them in
dfscrirainately around town. For
violation of tha ordinance a dealer
can be fined up to 500.

YOUNGEST LEGIONNAIRE
MEMBER OF LOCAL POST
Maurice Packer, of Woodland,
California, became the youngest
member of the local poet of the
American Legion, and perhaps the
youngest Leglonaire In the world,
when he was enrolled last night at
the regular American Legion meet
ing. He Ui visiting Vic McKenzie
of this city. Young Packer Is at
present 18 years old, and will be
asenior In high school next year.

where he waa enrolled as a regular
pprivat in the United States army.
He returned to the United States
'with him and waa mustered out of
th eaervlce In tha spring of 1111.
Action was also taken which will
result In the local poat being boat
on American Legion day at the
state fair next fall, and having

day. A communication was recent
ly received from the fair authorities
asking, that the American Legion
take charge of the program for
one day.
