It was the second defeat of the
season (or the Newberg nine hav
ing lost their other game to the
locals at Newberg when the red
and black nine- took them Into
camp by a 12 to 7 score.
In the third tuning the New
berg team took the lead when they
scored one run. Drager came in
too (ar on Courtney's liner and
allowed Courtney to go to second.
Renne beat out a sacrifice anil
Courtney went to third. Courtney
was caught oft third, Kelly to
Oirod to Kelly. Renne went to
second on the play. Hoard hit a
hard liner to Louis Girod which
Olrod was barely able to knock
down and Renne crossed the plate
with the (irst run of the game.
The locals tried hard to over
come the one run lead but wore
unable to hit safely until the sixth
Inning when they tied the score at

In one of the hardest fought
games of the Monkey league the
Hageman Sluggers defeated scout
troop No. 4 by a score of 13 to 11.
The scouts were In the lead until
the last Inning when the Slug
gers came from behind and won
the game. The feature of the
game was a home run by Joe Dar
by, scouts diminutive nurler.
Darby Is almost as small as a
midget but pitched a nice game
and struck out six men. The Slug
gers played a consistent . game
and showed much practice had
been put into tne team.

Oregon's Splendid
Highway System
Must Be Preserved
In their desperate appeal to get the people to sign
the referendum petitions on the Truck and Bus Bill some
of the circulators in the City of Portland and through
out the State are telling the public that the Bill increas
ing license fees charged for Hire Trucks and Busses is
intended to drive Trucks and Busses off the paved high
ways. Other petition circulators are telling the people
that the Bill is only 'aimed at busses and not at trucks.
Neither of these statements is true. There was no in
tention on the part of the Legislature to drive Trucks
and Busses off the roads but the Legislature did intend
in passing that law, to require these enormously heavy
for Hire Trucks and Busses to contribute more money
in license fees to be used in repairing the terrible
damage that they are doing to our fine roads all over
the State every day.
Don't be misled into signing these petitions by fairy
stories told you by circulators of these petitions. There
is no desire on the part of anybody to drive Trucks and
Busses off the roads, but everybody feels that these ten
ton to twenty ton Trucks and Busses that are running
on the roads for hire ought to contribute in license
taxes more than they do toward repairing the damage
they are doing to our paved roads. The total amount of
license paid per year by all the Trucks and Busses oper
ating in Oregon will not repair ten percent of the damage
they are doing to the roads.
Don't sign these referendum petitions and tell your
neighbors not to do so.
