WEST SALEM TO
VOTE ON WATER
With a ma is meeting in the
basement ot the Went Salem
church Friday night, effort will
fee made to reach an understand
lcg between residents of Wont Ha
lein regarding the bond issue of
(5000 to be voted on May 8. The
money la for the purpose of add
ing to facilities ot the West Salem
municipal water plant. Coming
up for vote a month ago, the
bonds were' turned down by a
majority of two rotes. Many
residents ot West Salem believe
that the proopsitlon was mlaun
der stood and that at a general
mass meeting It can be explained
and definite understanding reach
ed. John A. Giieser, mayor ot the
city, has called the meeting.
WcBt Sulcm now has a $35,000
water system, vhlch is pronounced
by the state board of health to
furnish water as pure as any l!i
the state. No chemical of any
kind is roqulred to be put int-i
the water to purify It. With the
growth of the city, howevor, a
new well and additional equip
ment is declared to be necessary.
A cannery Ijeing built in West
r Salem, which will employ 30 men
find 70 women during b months
of the year, is rapidly ncarine
completion and will be ready foi
use when canning season stars.
Other industries are also drawing
people to West Falcm, with the ct
foct that the present water supply
Is rapidly becoming Inadequate, Ii
is said.
As the stiuatlon has been ex
plained by Mayor Oosser, a state
law prevents a municipal corpora
tion from using water rent with
which to purchase equipment tor
the municipal water plant. A bond
issue is necessary, ho says, and
the bonds must gradually be re
tired by applying money secured
through direct taxation. The
present budget ot the city Is ap
proximately JG0O0 a year and Mr.
Gosscr estimator that $500 could
be usejd to pay off the bonds.
