Showers did not prevent hun
dreds o t fishermen rising early
this morning and scattering along
trout streams fur and near to try
their luck at capturing the fish
whoee winter's period ot safety
came to an end today. By actual
count over 300 fishing licenses
were eold since Sunday at the
seveu places in Salem where li
censes are sold and local fisher
men estimated that approximately
that number wouid leave the city,
armed with their most effective
tackle today. ."Everybody and his
grandmother went out this morn
ing,'' said the proprietor of one
sporting goods store.
Fishermen were headed lor an
the smaller streams that are at all
accessible. Many were intending
to fish Mill creek between the re
form school and at ay ton, Beaver
creek, the Rickreali river, the Abi
qua, the Butte, Battle creek, the
Mill creek that runs near Dallas.
Lake creek, a number ot coast
streams and other favorite
streams. The Thomas, the Cala
pooia, the Cr Ah tree, tbo Santlam
and other larger streams were not
fished so heavily, anglers expect
ing to strike those streams later ln
the season.
The same fishing laws that gov
erned last season are in force at
the present time and will bo In
force until Muy 28. when a few
minor changes will bo effective.
U. G. Royer, county clerk, has re
ceived a letter from the state game
department which reads ln part a?
follows:
"There are very few changes In
the fiahiue laws; however, a sup
ply will be forward to you as soon
as printed and ready for distribu
tion."
The law states that trout caught
must be over Q inches in length,
find provides a hag limit of HO tisli
or 20 pounds in uny one any, nnu
60 fish or 40 pounds in any seven
consecutive days.
PERSHIN BUYS DAWES
SILENCE WITH TICKET
Chicago, Apr. 15. A circus
ticket was used fat night by
General John J. Penciling to bribe
Vice President Charles O. Dawes
to suppress a story on the retired
army commander.
At the dinner of the 86th dtvls
iou officers, General Pershing re
lated how he had once ordered
the vice president, then a colonel
to throw away a cigar and button
hie overcoat, and how Dawes had
replied characteristically.
General Dawes refused during
the dinner to retaliate, but said
as they left: "He a taking mc
away so I can't tell the story I
know about him.
And both went to the circus.
