TONIGHT
Local citizens will have a final opportunity to hear the plans regard
ing the Oregon Linen Mill proposed for Salem at a cost of $640,000.
Never before were Salem citizens, business men and women invited to
attend a meeting which had such a bearing on their future prosperity and
and the community growth.
The establishment of this linen mill in Salem will increase business
for every store in the city. It means more business for the boot-black, the
cigar stand, the news-boys, clothing stores, shoe stores, dairies, doctors,
dentists, lawyers, sawmills and every single, solitary institution or person
producing or rendering any service of value. A greatly enlarged field of
cron production at stable prices will be opened up for the farmers.
A Dream Comes True
For the past twenty years the Willamette valley has
talked flax production and we finally produced as fine
flax as i3 raised. But for years after it was successfully
demonstrated that we could produce the raw material we
were unable to focus the attention of linen manufacturers
on this locality to a sufficient extent to get them to invest
the necessary money here for the manufacture of linen.
That day has passed, however. The opportunity is now
before us to secure one of the finest linen mills in the
country.
The gentleman who will build and operate this mill
stands ready to put $62-000 hard cash into the proposition.
Our neighbors in Albany will subscribe $50,000. .Our
Silverton friends offer $50,000. Portland capital will
come in for a large amount. It is estimated that Salem
will have to raise some $300,000 to make the mill an
assured success. . A few local business men have already
volunteered upwards of $100,000 of this amount. Not a
dollar is being spent for salesmen's commissions, pro
moters' bonuses or expenses usually connected with the
sale of $640,000 worth of stock for an industry. In this
case the $640,000 goes into the linen mill.
Additional Dividends
Seven percent dividends will be paid on the preferred
stock in this company. But every merchant will make
far more than 7 percent on any money he invests in the
undertaking- from "the business he will do with the
hundreds of new people who will come to Salem as the
result of this new payroll. Every workman who can sub
scribe for this stock makes Salem a better place in which
to live and secure employment, thereby bettering his
chances for good and steady wages. Every farmer who
takes this stock definitely increases the value of his farm
through establishing a market for a new crop which
produces assured returns.
There is no reason that any local man can advance for
not interesting himself in the development of the linen
industry in Salem.. Attend the mass meeting at the
Grand opera house tonight at 8 o'clock. Listen to what
the business men who will be there have to say on this
proposition. Remember that you are not asked to make
any donations. If you go into this undertaking you will
be investing your money in a substantial business which
pays good dividends. The opportunity is here for all of
