GLEE CONTEST
The 17th anuua freshman glee,
staged by the studeuU of Wil
lamette uuiversfty in the Salem
armory Saturday ntght, wae won
by the first year class. It waa the
first time in many years that the
glee has been won by the frehmen.
The frenhinan sung was entitled
"Willamette." 1 he words were
written by Louise Fiudley anJ
Karl Pemberlon; the music was
written by Louise Fiudley. The
freshmen spring an original stunt
in Introducing an orchestra as
part of their number.
Other places were awarded as
follows: Juniors. 2d; seniors, 3d;
sophomores, 4th. The senior
made their rirst appearance of the
year in caps and gowns.
As a foreword to the glee,
Charles Kedding, president of the
freshman clas-, spoke a word of
welcome to the audience, and
briefly explained the purpose of
tho glee. A violin solo was given
hy Miss Helen Selig. Between the
junior and uophomore song a read
ing, entitled "The Heart of ar
Ave.-age Man." by Anthony Eu
wer. was re id by Miss Sadie Jo
Head. After the last contesting
class had sung Its song. Miss Mel
ton played a piono solo, "Hungar
ian Rhapsody No. 12," by Liszt.
The presentation of the fresh
man glee pennant to the fresh
man clans was made by Professor
James T. Matthews of the univer
sity. Ag a rrsult of winning the
contest the freshmen will be al
lowed to place a silver clasp, bear
ing their numeral, on the stream
ers hanging from the pennant.
