BEAT IN SENATE
Senator Beala bill which pro
posed an appropriation of $125,
000 for the establishment of 20
branch normal schools In the
atate to operate under the state
department of education, was de
feated In the senate yesterday,
the senate dividing evenly on the
measure. The hill had a favorable
report from the way and means
committee.
Juet prior to this senate bill
46, barked by State Superintend
ent Churchill, and providing for
the appointment of two high
achool Inspectors, was killed by
Indefinite postponement. A hard
fight was made for both these
measures.
Following their defeat, senate
hill -196, also backed by Super
intendent Churchill, and provid
ing for teacher training centers
in 10 Oregon high schools, was
indefinitely postponed, the lat?r
was not considered by Churchill
as neceraary after the passage
Monday of the Ashland normal
school bill and was not pushed
by Its sponsors. The same feeling
Influenced the vote on the other
two bills.
