NEW TREATMENT
FOR PAVEMENT
CURE PROPOSED
City officials are Investigating
the Question of the use ot silicate
of soda on concrete pavements
during the period ot ""curing ' Ir
take the place ot sawdust now In
use. It is claimed the chenrlcal
preparation will set the pavement
for use with from 10 to 14 days
while now a watt of at least 30
days Is required before the pave
ment sets fit for use, under the
sawdust treatment.
The question of expense Is one
now being discussed In connection
with the proposed change, the
silicate of soda costing about four
cents a pound, but definite data
has not yet been secured as to how
much of a spread a pound of the
chemical will n.ake on the pave
ment. The chemical Is applied In
a liquid form. The use of saw-
LUust Is considered very expensive
and It Is considered likely a
change may be made It the ex
pense can be reduced.
Mrs. W. P. Lord used some of
the silicate of soda on the gravel
road on Mission street by her
home last summer. The chemical
kept the dust down and the weeds
out successfully during the sum
mer, but broke holes Into the road
bed when rains came In the fall.
Street Commissioner Low has
received a compliment from the
highway paving Inspector for the
state who examines paving In
various cities, with the declaration
that the concrete now used In
Salem as put down by the city Is
the best product turned out any
where In the etate. The street
commissioner says he also has
picked up some new wrinkles on
pavement which he will put Into
use on work this summer and
make a still better grade ot street
TWO SENATORS
PROBED FOR
TAKING FEES
(Continued from Page One)
The accusation against Senator
Spencer, the source ot which has
not been revealed, is that he as
sisted In obtaining from the de
partment of commerce a renewal
ot a contract for -the Foulke Fur
company of St. I.ouUi fur which his
law firm was counsel, under whtcn
that company handles the govern
ment seal skins from the Pribiluff
Islands.
Senator Bursum Is accused by
Carl Magee, a New Mexico news
paperman, with having entered in
to a contract to sell cattle in Mox
ico and with having approached
agents of the war finance corpora
tion regarding the financing of
the sale.
Senator Bursom said today he
had not been advised by the de
partment of justice that the Ma
gee charges were being Invest!
gated. He said they related to
cattle sales in Mexico and had
been publislu i a year ago. Any
charge that Ye had approached
any agent o the war finance cor
poration with respect to financing
a eale of cattle In Moxfco, he said.
was without foundation.
The New Mexico senator said he
had proposed the sule of some cat
tle in Mexico some years ago for
Americans who had sent their cat
tle over the board for pasturage,
but that the sale never had been
made. He added that the charge
was renewed now for the purpose
of embarrassing him In the contest
he has brought to retain hie sea
in the senate.
