CUT TO $75,000
The way and meant committee,
In the words of Senator K tup! 05,
apajnuodically wrestled with maiy
things last night ajid took drastic
action on several state department
Among the Institutions that felt
the Iron hand of the committee
was the state library, which was
deeply slashed. The library orig
inally placed before the state bud
get commission requests totaling
198,140 for the biennium, and the
commission cut th'.s to $90,000.
Recently Ml Cornelia Marvin,
state librarian, and Edgar 11. 1'lp
er of the library board appeared be
fore the committee and nked for
the full amount asked, Mins Mar
Tin declaring that the work had
been much hampered In tho l;iM
two years .by shortage of funds. In
stead of making the full allowance
the committee last night cut flj.
00 off the budget commission's
figures and voted to allow only
$75,000. A peppery discussion pre
ceded the vote.
The attorney general suffered at
the hands of tho committee. Ills
request was for $66,280 and some
time ago the board voted to al
low only 430,000. Van Winkle ask
el to up pear and declared if all
be aked were not allowed the
committed thuM recommend re
paal of the act whereby the at
torney general Is sent about the
state to appear in various cnaoa.
All the board would do last nitht,
however, was to allow $55,000.
The committee refused to ap
propriate anything for the Orc-xun
Employment Institution for the
blind In 1'ortland, which wnnted
$15,000 for a new building. Three
Hems for the normal school nt
Monmouth were approved. The.se
were $80,000 for a new clans room.
$-10,000 for additional Instructors
and l,iH0 for no watwer and
paving. Other Items will be pass
ed on later.
Because farming operations at
the state school for the deaf are
going Into the "red" year after
year the committee will probably
recommend to the smte board 01
control that the school drop farm
ing work a-nd give Us attention al
most entirely to school Instruction.
A later report Is awaited.
The figure of tl' 14.101 for the
University of Oregon medical
school in Portland, which amount
was approved by Dr. R. li. Dille
hunt, was approved. The budget
commission recommended $200,000
The full -amoung of $61,0CO asked
for tho Dornbechcr Memorial hos
pital for children was also approv
ed.
Following out a scheme broach
ed some ti.Tie ago for raiting more
revenue the committee found that
by lopping off from 10 to IS per
cent from the receipts of various
state activities and divert. ni? those
amounts to the cxneral fund of the
Btatj about 92.6T416.43 would be
secured. If the attorney general
approves this a bill will be drawn.
Fifteen per cent would be requir
ed from the game cornmi&Mon,
fish commission, elate fire mar
shal, state real estate department,
market agent, medical examiners'
board, boa id of optometries and
fltate board of pharmacy. Several
others would be rtquiied to con
tiibuate 10 per cent.
An opinion from the attorney
general held that the one-fourth
mill road tax cannot be diertri to
any other puipuse prior to l'J2C.
