The Ill-fated motor bout In
which Charles Purcell lot his Hie
in the Willamette rlrer oo the

ered last evening by Walter Uertb,
proprietor of the Wee Salem store,
who rescued P. L. Turnidpe, Pur
cell's companion, from drowning
en the night oX tn accident.
While Uerh has been assisting
the relatives of Turntnge and Pur.

hopes until the water began to
bate appreciably. Yesterday be
started out in dead earnest going
down one side of the river In bis
launch as far as Lincoln and then
doubling back. Coming up on this
side, he got to point about 60
yards below where .be accident
happened on the west side of M in
to island but the east side of the
main channel and he discovered
the launch lying un Its aide. The
water bos gone down so that a
bare tip of one side of the motor
boat was visible above water. It
was near dark wuen the discovery
was made.
It was thought possible Purcell
may be under the boat, that he
seized the boat when he accident
occurred and went down with It,
