old and the new style of college
debating clashed on a local plat
form. Tbe University of West Vir
ginia team, debating against a
teau ot Willamette university,
presented their arguments In a
witty, careiess, free and easy ntyle
that has never before been heard
in Salem. One ot the speakers
actually said: "We want to inako
It clear to anyone who may no
understand the fact already that
we don't care who gets the decision
in this debate.

meant little or nothing, the two

than a mere informal discussion
of the question, is said to be due
to the English Influence on Amer

years ago when American and
English colleges began to debate

gaining steadily In popularity on

was the first time that a Salm
audience heard anything of the
