Attractive
Concert
Tonight
Nearly five weeka have parsed
loce Salem concert soers have
had the opportunity of attending
concert. The pre-holtday sea
son was marked with a number
of affairs In which artists of both
local and national fame were pre
sented. Several of the musical
clube save their annual Christ
mas concert and all of the lead
ing church choirs prepared beau
tiful Yuletide program. Aa a re
action came a lull In musical ac
tlvltiee which will be broken to
sight when the MacDowell club
will present four concert artiste
la a program at the First Chris
tian church.
Occupying the foremost places
on the program will be Frederick
W. Goodrich, organist, and Mis
Prances Vlrglnie Melton, pianist.
Profeeeor Goodrich la recognized
as a musician of the highest type.
His entire life haa been devoted
to the pursuit of musical study
and teaching. Music is his avoca
tion as well as his vocation. He
commenced hia career aa an or
ganist in London more than twen
ty five years ago, with the posi
tion of choir director In one of
the largest Anglican churches In
the British capital. For the past
twenty years he hus made his
home in this country and he Is
now recognized as one of the fore
, most organists In the northwest.
He la dean of the Portland chap
ter of the American Guild of Or
ganists. Professor Goodrich will
give three groups of numbers in
the concert tonight.
Miss Melton's appearance is
waited with great Interest for
It will mark her debut before a
Salem audience. With the train
ing gained as the result of years
of study with such masters as
William Sherwood, Wagner
Swayne, Harold Bauer, Severln
Eieenberger and Thcodor I-.es-chetizky
and with several years
of concert experience Miss Mel
ton's appearance on a 'program
adds Immensely to its attractive
ness. Miss Nellie Schwab, soprano,
and Leslie Springer, baritone, are
two local singers who will -each
appear In a group tonight. Both
are the possessors of splendid
voices well trained.
The concert will open at 8:15
thie evening. This is the third in
the series sponsored by the Mac
Dowell club. Madame Freda
Stjerna, Swedish American so
prano, and Royal Dadmun, bari
tone, are the two artists of na
tional renown who will appear
under the MacDowell club aus
pices later In the musical season.
The Oregon Civic league, the
Portland Federation of Women's
Organizations and the American
Association of University Women
jointly are giving a luncheon in
the crystal room of the Hotel
Benson, Saturday at 12:15 p. m.
for a discussion of International
relations and a world court. The
principal address will be given
by Judge Charles H. Carey, who
will speak on "Why the United
States Should Participate in a
World Court." Mrs. A. W. Coop
er, regional director of A. A. IT.
W., will tell of the Interest of
that organization In a world

Mrs. J. C. Mullen entertained
the members of the "Idle Hour"
club at her home on Wednesday
afternoon. The first part of the
afternoon was spent In sewing
after which a dainty lunch was
eerved by the hostess.
In the group were Mrs. W. J.
Lebold, Mrs. M. Dearing, Mrs.
Teeters, who were special guests,
and Mrs. V. M. Clark, Mrs. E. G.
Gritton, Mrs. Thomas Tuson,
Mrs. Elton Rae and the hostess,
Mrs. Mullen.
Miss Elizabeth Levy prizes as
her choicest possession the violin I
which she had the opportunity to
purchase more than a year ago)
from the private collection of
Caesar Thompson, her eminent:
teacher. It is a violin which hej
elected personally for Miss Levy.
It la the work of Antonio Grog-j
nani, a master craftsman who
lived in Leghoen, Italy, more than
two hundred years ago. Grognani
made the instrument for a girl
and It la said to possess tonal
qualities specially suited to a
woman's bowing. It has been en
dorsed aa genuine by some of the
leading firms of the east. Miss
Levy will use this violin in her
home coming concert next Wed
nesday evening In the First
Christian church.

of the Brush College Helpers,
met yesterday at Mrs. Frank
Crawford's home for the purpose
of sewing on the small sun bon
nets to be used in the campaign
for "pennies' for the Old Peo
ples' home.

man of Albany, spent Wednes
day with Salem friends.
At a meeting of the Royal
Neighbors last evening plans
were completed and committees
were appointed to arrange for
the state convention of the lodge
to be held in Albany March 17
13. Several hundred delegates arc
expected to be present at this
time. Delegates will bo elected to
the grand lodge which meets in
Kansas City this year. An elec
tion of state officers will also be
