3,C!TY CENSUS TO
'BE TAKEN BY
W. U. STUDENTS
The survey of the city ot Salem,
to be begun next Sunday by some
hundred students of Willamette
university, working under the
direction of tho sociological de
partment of that Institution, will
result In a complete, authentic
census of the city, it was said to
day by Professor S. B. Laughlin,
sociological professor In charge of
the survey. Nothing more than a
rough estimate of Salem's popula
tion has been taken la the last
five years.
Estimating that there are be
tween five and six thousand
houses In Salem, the department
has had printed six thousand
cards, the Intention being to use
one for each house. The city has
been divided Into 20 districts,
with a corps of students, under the
direction of a captain, assigned to
each district.
Information will be gathered at
each house having to do with the
occupation ot the people living
there, places of birth and race.
Those who were not born In Ore
gon will be asked, not only where
they were boru. but where they
have lived before coming to Ore
gon. Information will be collected
as to the number ot children go
ing to school outside ot Salem,
how many ot the people are col
lege graduates and to what
church, it any, they belong.
The cards will be filed at the
local Y. W. C. . office. The Y,
W. C. A. originally suggested the
idea ot the surrey.
BEARCATS PLAY
Doped to be one of the c loser, t
games ot the season, the clash be
tween tho Willamette and Whit
man bosketbcll quintets will occur
tonight. The game at Walla Wal'.a
between the two teams, pUycd
when the Willamette squad touU
its tour north, resulted in a thro-3-polnt
win by the Missionaries, the.
final scure being 27 to 24.
Whitman has played every
school in the northwest conference
except Pacific and has been de
feated by margins not quite so
wide as the games Willamette has
lost to the same teams. In a game
at Eugene last night, the Oregcu
team defeated Whitman by a scire
of 44 to 22, with Okerherg. stellar
Oregon center, being closely checK
ed. At Corvallis the night before
Whitman was defeated by the Ag
gies by a safe margin, but ut
Walla Walla the two teams played
a nip and tuck game, the Orjn
school finally winning 12 to 11.

REPRISALS
TO FOLLOW
PIERCE COUP
(Continued from Page One
occupying what appears to be an
impregnable position; facing him
on the other wing is the more or
lees shattered adverse majority
in the senate; In the center is the
powerful lobby reserve, ready at
a moment's notice to send rein
forcements to either wing.
Defending . the gubernatorial
trenches is but a single force, the
senate bloc in opposition to ham
stringing the executive, and that
of questionably strength.
Yesterday the strategist di
recting the movements of the de
fenders first claimed a voting
strength of 14 in the senate; lat
er they admitted that they could
only count on 12 to stick,. Today
an Impartial survey of their forc
es falls to reveal more than nine
members who can be counted on
to stand at their posts through
the attarks on the governor's
strongholds in the Port of Port
land, the prohibition department,
the office ot the market agent,
the state fair board, the bonus
commission and other miner
points. In eome of these skirmish
os the governor can logically ex
pect to muster the eleven or even
twelve voles nccctwiiry to r.ustaln
his vetoes In the senate, but only
nine appear to be pledged to
consistent opposition to all ham
stringing.
They are Senators Jrwcph. Ed
dy. Garland, Flk, Strayer. Toozc,
LaFollctt, Johnson and Beats.
On certain measures the
strength of this lineup may
augmented by votes ot Brown,
Kinney, Staples or Hare.
There 1 a growing conviction
around the lobby today that in
Etoad of accomplishing a diplo
matic coup yesterday in announc
ing tho appointment of five com
missioners of the Port ot Port
land who do not Like office un
til Juue 1, the governor commit
ted a strategical error, and gave
to the legislature the opening for
which its lenders have been look
ing. He invited trouble, nnd un
questionably he will he obliged.
The counter offensive ii ex
pected to open tomorrow with the
introduction of a hill to remove
from the hands of the governor
