Tho ruling wa announced by
Revenue Commissioner Blair in
a letter to Senator Shortrldge,
republican, California, holding
that the employes of the water
and electric light works at Riv
erside, Cal., mutt pay the feder
al tax.
Mr. Blair said that although
municipal employes heretofore
had been regarded as exempt un
der the federal law, a reexami
nation of the statutes revealed
that certain classes could not
claim such exemption. The tax
must be paid, he said, by persons
employed by certain utilities, like
streetcar companies, which com
pete with private enterprises.
