monoxide gas which has occurred

last night with Jack Glavsy. 18,

tim. Glavey was found uncon
scious on the floor of his bathroom
and died without regaining con
sciousness in a police ambulance
on the way to the hospital. Po
lice reported that bis death was
apparently accidental and that It
was caused by the lethal fumes
generated by a gus heater In the

J. V. Starrett of Roseburg. a
special Investigator for the sUU
and board, filed a report yester
day in which he estimated that
losses to the state from bad loans
of school funds in the past wou.d
aggregate $u00,0l)0. Governor
Pierce and State Treasurer Myers
are inclined to place credence in
the report, but state officials of
different political faith do uot.
Prior to the election It was the
contention of republicans that u
stories of heavy losses from the
school fund loans were tor politi
cal purposes to boost the candidacy
of Mr. Myers for state treasurer,
Starrett 's report iu the na
ture ot a final summarisation. He
claims the heaviest losses wilt be
Harney, Malheur, Wallowa,
Klamath and Lake counties. Men
tion Is also made ot "stupendous
losses' ' resulting from loans of
many years ago. Another cause of
losses is Bald to be the failure of
irrigation schemes to live up to ex
pectations. He urges that an ira
mediate effort be made to ascer
tain whether a state's mortgage
has priority over that of bond
holders in irrigation districts. He
declares there is still oportunity
to save the state many thousan-Iu
of dollars.
Starrett made a number of re
ports prior to the election, and in
vesication of these by persons nut
politically friendly to Governor
Fierce and State Treasurer ny?ra
led to assertions that the reports
were untrue. Some of the in
vestigations were made by resl
dents of counties where heavy
losses were claimed in the reports.

sults of which will be tbe calling
of a church secretary and the se
lection of a musical director who
will give full lime to their work.
Miss Whisler of Eugene is the like
ly appointee for the church secre
taryship.
Reports shewed that nearly
$2000 bad been expended during
the year for missions and benevo
lence. The work of the church
also extended to the grant of fi
nancial assistance to several stu
dents.
A large number ot pledges and
a larger amount for the support
of the church has been subscribe!
for the new year than ever before
in the history of the church.

FAIR IN FALL
Horsemen, peeved at the atti
tude of the state fair board which
ousted them from their winter
quarters here and sent them to
Canby, are circulating resolutions
among themselves to make no en
tries whatever in the state fair
races here next fall, according to
Mrs. Z. J. Rlggs of Salem who has
talked to the ho rue men at Canby
where they are now wintering.
Just how far the signing up has
gone has uot been ascertained.
'There are about 60 horeea at
Canby and the people there nave
greeted the horsemen with open
arms and giving them the most
royal kind ot treatment," said
Mrs. Rigge. "In addition the
presence ot the horsemen there
has given a materially added im
petus to interest In the Clacka
mas county fair held at that place
and horsemen hare promised the
fair to give them some real rac
ing which ie boosting the fair
atock.

One of the goals ot Mayor John
B. Giesy during his second ad
ministration will be a definite
program for a new water system
for Salem, and this will probably
be touched upon In his message
next Monday night. The mayor
announced it several months ago
in a speech before the chamber
ot commerce.
As a means ot arriving at a
water program the mayor says ho
will again appoint a special wa
ter committee ot the city council,
whotse duty It will be to take the
lead In working out a plan. The
members will probably be thjse
who have served on the old spe
cial committee except those who
have retired from the council.
Changes In the council will ne
cessitate the appointment ot oome
new members.
