Carriers Address of
Salem's First Carrier
THE CAPITAL JOURNAL; SALEM, OREGON
Delivered 57 Years Ago
OUR BKT WISHES
The following carrier's address
wa written and distributed by
Judge Peter H. D'Arcy to his pat
rona on New Year's day, 1868. He
was Salem's first newspaper car
rier and, distributed the American
Unionist, as the Statesman was
called at the close of the civil war
period. The address reads as fol
lows: Come all ye reaiers, far and near,
And hear the News-Hoy's greet
ing! The old year's gone, the new one's
here,
And still Old Time Is fleeting.
And ulnce Old Time In on the wing,
And will be ever flying.
Why should we fear to laugh and
sing.
And be forever sighing?
Then come from work-shop, store
and farm,
From country, town and city;
'Twill do tho best of you no harm
To hear our simple ditty.
Through many troubles, toils and
fears,
And many sore vexations,
We've made to you, In the past
years,
Our weekly visitations.
We've brought from every foreign
clime
Each item and each runlor;
We've culled the rarest gems of
Rhyme
And brightest sparks of Humor.
We've told you of each high de
bate. And lofty disputation,
Twixt politicians, small and great.
Throughout this mighty nation.
We've visited the battle-plain,
Where martial hosts contended.
To count the wounded and the
slain.
When tho wild strife was ended.
And ever battling for the Right,
Against the horns of Treason
Truth for our armor, strong and
bright,
Our only weapon, Reason
We've stood, and shall forever
stand,
What power
us?)
Btlll battling for our native land
'Gainst all the foes that meet us.
The battle is but just begun;
The Right must be defended;
Ind many a etorin will hide the sun
Before the strife is ended.
can e'er defeat
Shall be our ocrnn.-i tnn
The trespasser shall have no rest
iiowever nign nis station.
If Aliermen should go astray,
Or Congressmen be drunken
If Senators should fall away
To depths of vileness sunken
Should Presidents their power
abuse.
Prove faithless or unstable-
Well tell them of their P i and Q'l
As well as we are able.
While criticizing every man.
And every false deduction,
We'll speak as mildly as we can
Of Andy's Reconstruction.
Because Old Andy once agreed
To be the Freedman's Mosee,
That Is no cause why he should
lead
The white folks by the noses.
Since this our Moses has turned
back.
Forgive us, gentle reader.
If we keep on the good old track.
And seek some other leader.
Another leader, brave and true
(And may he soon be
GRANT-ed),
Whose steady fee on Freedom's
ground
Are firmly, surely planted.
Our hosts are gathering for
fight
A conflict of opinions,
As fierce as that our armies fought
With Treason's bloody minions.
Rut God will surely speed the
right;
Let no true freeman doubt it.
GRANT Is our leader! name of
might,
Let every freeman shout It.
Then, welcome strife and welcome
toil,
And wolcome each vexation!
If out of all we come at last
A free and happy nation.
And hail, all hail! to Sixty-Eight!
Farewell to Sixty-Seven!
To serve our "Union, strong and
great
Le: all our days be given.
TUB CARRIER.
Xew Year's Day, 1868.
Salem, Oregon, P. H. D'Arcy.
NEW INCORPORATIONS
But, "On, still on!" our cry shall
be,
Though foes be thick before us;
The starry emblem of the free
Must still float proudly o'er us.
Let foe within or foes without
With rancorous hate assail us
Still wo can never suffer rout,
For Truth can never fail us.
Life Is a battle, flece and strong,
And since we needs must fight it,
If we find aught we think Is
wrong,
We'll do our best to right it.
To praise or blame, as we deem
best,
The following articles of incor
poration were filed yesterday with

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
Nothing is more important during the winter months
to insure perfect health for ourselves and families than
an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables. We are
proud of the fact that the public has christened
us "Salem Fruit and Vegetable Headquarters." Our
volume of one car each per month of apples and spuds
justifies their judgment.
We start the new year with the sense of having
gained 30 per cent in our volume in the last six months.
