MNUAKUUIL PROPOSAL ROCK IIDFNTIFY RflflY
PLEADS CONTRACT
I,
Chlraiio, Oft. 21 Many of the
contraem me:!th,nod by the govern
ment In Its Milt Bturled last June
iindor the Sherman act against
some fit ty oil companies expired
long before the suit was filed, the
Standard Oil company of Indiana
set up here in Its answer. The
Texas company recently filed a
general denial ot the charges.
The licensing of one company to
use the patents of another was tho
result of many patents, soma of
which overlapped others so that
some of the companies were threat
enlng each other with Infringe
ment suits, according to tho an
swer. To obviate this situation, the
answer sets torth, It was agreed to
adjust these controversies for use
of "cracking" patents by licencing
the companies.
These so-called pooling agree
ments were not combinations in
restraint of trade or commerce
among the stales or foreign na
tions, ns charged by Iho govern
ment, the answer asserted, but, on
the contrary, the Standard Oil com
pany of Indiana "has endeavored
to and has observed in letter and
spirit the laws of the United States
of America."
Tho defendant company, accord
ing to the answer, owns 23 de
fendant valid United States pat
ents for tho cracking process.
Early in Its experience In licensing
other companies to uso Its patents,
the answer said, there were restric
tive clauses in the' contracts, as ad
vised by its legal counsel, for the
protection of its business, but that
"all contracts containing the res
trictive provision" about which
the government complained, ex
pired more than six years before
filing tho suit so that "long prior
to tho commencement of this suit
the practice of placing any restric
tion whatsoever upon licensees had
been abandoned," its licensees
now, the company contended, "are
wholly free of limitation ns to
quantity of production, place of
sale or price."

She designed it to show women how easy it
is to make their own stylish, distinctive
clothes, when they have proper instruction.
We are enabled to demonstrate the making
of the One Hour Dress through special per
