Hawthorne, 63, who died yesterday afternoon near Chemaw'a, were held this afternoon at two o'clock from the Webb and Clough chapel. Rev. W. T. Millikin conducted the serv ices. Interment was made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. Miss Celia Bollman of La Grande is to succeed to the position of sten ographer in the executive office when Governor Pierce assumes office it has become known here. Miss Boll- maa has been private secretary to i lerce at La Grande for some time Miss Violet Welburn who baa been Governor Olcott's stenographer for the past four years expects to serve as a clerk to one of the numerous committees of the forthcoming leg islature. The Tumbling , Midgets, a T. M C. A. club, basketball team are plan ning a barnstorming tour for the holidays. On Tuesday, Dec. 26, they will go to Newberg to meet a "Y" team and on Wednesday and Thursday 'they will be in Portland" where they are to meet two of the Y. M. C. A. club teams. Staulev Waters is captain of the team. The prevalence of diptheria in the city has caused a large shrinkage in the attendance at the Y. M. C. A. classes, according to Mead Elli ott, boys' work secretary. Died HAWTHORNE James Buchan an Hawthorne passed away at his home near Chemawa, Dec. 22, 1922, at 12:20 a. m. Mr. Hawthorne was 63 years old and is survived by his widow, Mrs. Altha Hawthorne, one son L. A. Hawthorne, and one daughter, Lucille Hawthorne, all of Salem. Funeral services were held at the Webb and Clough chapel, Dec. 23, 1922, at 2 p. m. Rev. MilHken will conduct the services. Interment In the I. O. O. F. cemetery. COPPO Arsilio Coppo died at a local hospital Dec. 22, 1922, at 5:50 p. m. He was 41 years old The body was shipped by Webb and Clough to Portland for burial. FLEGEL Earl Coulsen Flegel Jr., infant son of Capt. and Mrs. E. C. Flegel, grandson of Dr and Mrs. R. E. Lee Sterner and Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Flegel of Portland, died suddenly Dec. 22, 1922, at 8:15 p. m. The baby was only four months old Rev Blsine E. EMERGENCY BOARD TO MEET HERENEXT WEEK Secretary of State Koier has call ed a meeting of the state emergency board for Friday, December 29, to consider the authorization of de ficiency appropriation of $2000 for the adjutant general's department to cover expenses incurred in giv ing relief to the citizens of Astoria following the fire wheh wiped out the business section of that citv The call has been issued at the re quest of Adjutant General White who points out that thousands of meals were served by national guardsmen during the emergency and hundreds of homeless were pro vided with beds through the Oregon guard.
