Jlew York Stocks.
New York, Sept. 1. Partial re
covery of prices In tha stock mar
ket this week was affected largely
at the expense of the shorts, that
element evidently taking heed of
gradual Improvement In many
lines In trade and Industry.
Oils were the outstanding fea
tures, however, the confusing
course of Ihe Mexican group being
aeeouipanlid by conflicting re
ports respecting the outcome of ne
gotiations now In progress.
Rails were only moderately re
sponsive to additional favorable
statements of earnings and several
of the Investment division, nota
bly the Hill group, were under
preasure arising from their doubt
ful dividend status.
Steels and equipments of the
more seasoned types threw off
much of their recent topor. al
though advices from steel centers
reported slow revival of activity.
In trade circle, however, the be
lief prevailed that large contracts
for rails would soon be awarded.
Crop demands prompted bancs
to draw heavily agslnst local res
erve, causing rail loans to hold at
5 14 per cent.
Marked Improvement was mani
fested In the Investment market.
This was evidenced by the higher
rang quoted for standard bonds
and the speedy sale of $25,000.00
of Brazilian government bonds, to
gether with smaller domestic and
foreign offerings.
