Motor Truck, Industry Has Banner Year Despite depressed business condi tions, me motor truck industry in 1920 not only equaled the 1910 pro duction of motor trucks but ex ceeded It by 43,000 vehicles, riv ing a total 1920 production of ,)4S -00 trucks. Perhaps the greatest single fac tor in making the 1920 production of trucks greater than that of 1919 was the tremendous increase in the manufacture of il speed trucks of three-quarter to one ton capacity. In previous years trucks of one-ton capacity and under gen erally did not exceed 60 per cent of the total production, but in 1920 almost 75 percent of all the trucks made were of one-ton capacity. According to an analysis made by the Commercial Vehicle 1,1 its review issue of January 1, J:i2i, (he average prices of all different sizes of trucks have increased only ic per cent up to January J, 1920. Taking the different dzes of trucks separately, those of 'ess than one half ton in capacity nave increased most in price. Trusts of less than one-half- ton capacity have, lump ed 25 percent in price, three-quarter tonners have increase 1 19 per cent, one-tonners 10 percent and one-and-one-half tonners 12.1 per cent. Trucks of from two tons ca pacity up have Increased individu ally anywhere from one -tenth of I percent to 7.3 percent, those low individual price increases helping bring down the total average price to the figure of 88 per cent, as !i .r above. According to the same authority trucks of one and a half tons capa city form the most popular mode1, no lesj than one huiidre I modi If, or 20 percent of the total number of 527 trucks listed on the J2l market, being of one and a half tons capacity. The next and most poular model is the two and a-haif tonner with ninety models,, follow ed by Ihe three-and a -half tonners, with 84 models. Western Springs, 111., March 18. The which has New Maxwell Truck Meets Set Standard Maxwell truck owners have been calling to the attention of Maxwell dealers an article in a recent issue of the Scientific American, cap tioned "The Trend of Motor Truck Design for 1921." This is a "brief survey of the fea tures displayed py 682 American truck models," and Maxwell truck owners are interested in finding that the Maxwell truck design in corporates a majority of the fea tures which the article saya are favored by most engineers. The first and most important fact brought out by Victor W. Pag M. 8. A. E., author of the article, is that the 1 ton truck isth most popular, inasmuch as 127'dis tinct models of this capacity are available, which makes it the most popular truck by a fair majority according to this system of compat ison. It has long been appreciated that tnere was a strong trend to the 1 '4 ton capacity truck, it being esti mated that 70 percent of all haul age is in loads of that weight oi under.
