Through persistent efforts of the Iini'lieridence Retail Merchants" association a new and considerably improved service goes into effect on the Valley & Slletz railroad to morrow morning between here and Valsetz. The improved service will benefit people living at way points and also benefit the busineSH men of this city. People living tit llos kins and other points on the line can come lo Independence in the morning and return in the evening, having plenty of time to do shop ping and get home early. Hereto- fore a mixed train has been run on the road making one trip a day each way. McCarthy, who was in town this week from his hop ranch east of Independence in Marion county, states that the wind Saturday at ternoon completely demolished three hop houses on the ranch, In fill ting a loss of $4,000. The wind caught the buildings broadside, he said, and wrecked them so com pletely that only a small portion of the lumber can be used In re building.
