Warren member of the state fish commission who ap peared bfeore the ways and means committee Monday night in behalf of the commission's request for $91,300 for the present biennlum. in other Sainton producing states this industry which last year yield ed approximately $12,000,000 in Oregon, has deteriorated into a lia bility. In the Puget Sound coun try, he declared, the salmon can ning industry was laced wltn a complete shut-down for a term of years in order to permit the indus try to rehabilitate itself. The situation in Oregon, War ren declared, was due to the active interest taken by the state in the feeding and hatching of fish and the protection of the young fry until they have reached an age sufficient to make them self-reliant. Feeding of fish is past the ex perimental stage in Oregon, accor ding to R. E. Clanton, master fish warden, wlho contends that the pack on the Columbia river hich has been holding its own for the last seven years, can be doubled with sufficient funds to extend the feeding ponds and increase the propagation of salmon fry. Reliance upon natural propaga tion could only result in disaster to the Industry in this state, as it had in Washington and other coast states, he declared. Representatives of the Florence Crittenden Refuge Hume appeared before the committee in behalf of their budget of $11,500 for the bi- en niura. The committee voted to report out Representative Lee's promo tion project adversely. The bill provided for an appropriation of $45,000 for promotion purposes.
