Otis Skinner in his
i-'.vecn jn oduetion of "Kismet.'' hu
mans are not the only actors who
are responsible for the enormous
cost of film productions.
In the filming of the court yard
seem s outside of lhe home of Hail,
the beggar, played hy Mr. Skinner
a number of doves were used. In
one particular scene the action
called for the feeding of these ap
parently HUiet birds by Elinor Fair
who is interpreting the role of Mar
sinali. In leading the script it all
sounded very simple, but the ac
tual making of the scenes was far
different indeed.
People who have learned to look
upon doves as quiet, patient, crea
tures would have a wonderful
awakening should they endeavor to
try to make them act natural be
fore a motion picture camera. For
hours Mr. Gaenier used every perr
suasive power that he knew to se
cure the requires effect, but every'
moment brought him closer to the
uiuleistaiuling that doves, too, are
temperamental.
The seehe was an Important one,
otherwise he would probably have
given up in despair. At last the
ff..,.i urtui secured, but only after
the entire company had been kept
waiting and the salaries of the en
tire cast and staff had piled up un
til the day's pay of each of tiie
birds iiad mounted up to a figure
that would make many of our fi
nancial wizards gasp. Adv.
naucial wizards gasp.
