Strangest Ship
In World to Be
Launched Sochi
London, Oct. 26. The strangest
ship in all the world will be launch
ed from Bhoreham harbor.
Nervous mariners who see it be
ing towed along the English chan
nel will imagine that a sort of
Tower of London has drifted out
to sea.
The weird craft is one of two
that have been built in the shallow
waters mud flats at low tide
that do duty fir a harbor at
Bhoreham. Incidentally they aro
the first ships built for centuries
on this part of ihe const.
Since they havj been rising like
two black towers against the low
coastline they have been the ob
jects of intense lurioshy to every
pasting ship and to every lands
man from Beachy Head to Bognor.
Most visitors to Brighton and
Hove, from whence they can bo
plainly seen, wonder what they are,
and are told that their purpose is
a strange secret locked in the
breasts of my Lords of the Ad
miralty, whoso property they are.
They have become known univer
sally as ' The Mystery Ships."
One popular view was explained
by an aged waterman, who an
nounced that they were to be sunk
In mid-channel as a foundation for
a bridge across to France.
Another view, fostered by the
authorities to satisfy curiosity, itt
tlin they are to be used to raise
-sunken wrecks.
Both these opinions are wrong.
When the ships were begun in
June, 1918, they wore to be a sur
prise for the Huns. Everyone who
knew their purpose was sworn to
ecrecv. and they are still on their
oath. The admiralty "declines in
formation." This, much, however, has been
learned. The first one, to be
launched very soon, will be used
in the defense of the Solent.
It will be towed to a spot near
the Nab lightship and there sunk
to the bed of the sea. Its concrete
"hull" will rest on the bottom, and
the teel tower -tit nutting it
which is equipped with a powerful
searchlight and some other techui
cal apparatus, will rise to a height
of about sixty feet above the sev
level at high tide. There are quar
ters for a permanent "crew"' of.
about ninety men.
Extensive preparations are beint?
made for the launch. The en
trance to the harbor has been
dredged and six powerful tugs aro
being sent to tow the new ship to
sea.
Every naval expert with four gold
bands and upwards on bin arm Is
expected to attend, led by the First
Lord of the Admiralty, Walter
Long, and possibly Mr. Church!!;,
but the board of admiralty hj-.v
declined to allow any bottles of
champagne to be cracked over Us j
"bow." j
No one has yet found a name for
the c raft. It is mild that more than
i has ail e. illy been spent
if these ships. j
