Independence, Or., Aug. 13. An In
crease in the telephone rates on the
lines serving Dullas and Falls City has
been ordered by the public service
commlfiHiqn. "This lino Is owned j
the Willamette Telephone company,
the same as the Independence and
Monmouth system, where an increase
was granted a few weeks ago. The new
rates are Identical with the rates
placed in elect here, and there is like'
wise a 10 cent toll charge between
Dallas and Falls City.

for a short time yesterday. They were
on their way home from an auto trip
tthrough Washington and Idaho.
Mrs. Ed. Owens left Tuesday for
Newport. She was met at Corvallia
by her daughter, Mrs. Dole Pomeroy
and children of Mabel. They will spend
a. couple of weeks on the beach and
then return to Independence where
Mrs. Pomeroy will visit among friends
Independence defeated Falls City in
a f ist baseball game playeq here Sun
day. It is an even draw now between
the two teams, each claiming two vie
lories. It is expected that another
game will be played here next Sunday,
Charles Irvine has returned from
three weeks' vacation spent at his
mountain ranch near Hosklns. Mrs,
Jrvine and daughter are spending the
week visiting friends in that locality.
Peter Kurre and wife have just re
turned from a two weeks' vacation
Hpent at Neskowin. - Peter is much
. pleased with the conditions at that
summer resort.

pendence girl, who has been spending
the summer with her sister, Mrs. Wal
ter Smith, in Alaska, was married Sat
urday, August 7, in Cordova. The name
name or tne groom is not known.
Dr. Charles Dunamore has returned
from Belknap where he spent a two
weeks' vacation.

Independence Girl
Independence, Or., Aug. 13. Miss
Ruby Gentry, a former Independence
girl and graduate of the ' Monmouth
normal school, was married on Tuesv
day of this week to Professor Sherman
Gilbert, principal of the high school at
Silver Lake, Wash. The ceremony was
performed at the home of the bride's
parents at Camas, Wash. Immediate-
arrangements have not yet been made
made. Mrs. Martie was past fifty
years of age and had lived In Ore
gon for some time. She moved here
with her husband from Donald short
ly before she was rendered helpless.
She is survived by her husband, one
son of Portland, and father, M. O.
Helgerson of this city.

J. M. Gentry of Camas, Wash., visit
ed in Independence Monday while en
route to Newport to spend a week at
tne seashore. For twenty-nine veara

Cooper farm east of here. Three years
ago he purchased a fruit farm at
Camas, and is much pleased with his
new home.
