Chicago, Aug. 2. It took but litti
buying today to hoist values in the
wheat market. - At first Scattered sell
ing on the part of commission houses
led to a brief setback. Abense, how
ever, of any important fresh liquida
tion made bears cautious and senti
ment developed that bottom prices had
been reached for at least the time be
ing. 5 Initial quotations which ranged
from thre to five and a half lower with
December $2.06 to $2.08 and March
$2.08 to $2.98 44 were followed uy a
rally to Well above Saturday's finish. .
Dry weather likely to, bring about
crop damage had a bullish effect on
corn.; After starting unchanged to
1 1-8 off, -. including September at
$1.33 8-4, and December at $1.19 H to
$1.20 1-8, the market scored a decidod
general advance.
Oats were gfverned by Corn, open
ing 1-8 to 6-8 lower, with September
67 : to 67 6-8, and then switching to
the upgrade. -
Provisions lacked support.
Wall Street.
- New York, Aug, 2. 'The stock mar
ket gave a good demonstration of re
stored confidence and optimistic feel
ing at the outset today as a result of
the wholesale .advances in railway
freight and passenger rates allowed by
the interstate commerce commission.
Commission houses were heavy pur
chasers, buying orders flowing in from
all sections of the country. Pools re
,'sumed their operations in the special
ties and the stock , market showed .
more breadth and activity than fop
some time. Railroad shares advanced
anyway from one to three and a half
points, with investment buying on
quite a liberal scale In theold line payi
ing issues. Low priced -shares which
have recently been in popular favor
were also extensively purchased with
the inquiry besides embracing a wida
variety of specialties. United States
SteelrStudebaker, Mexican Petroleum,
Baldwin Locomotive and various oth
er favorite shares were marked up
from onet o two and a half points,
